Episode 10 of Let’s Talk: Sophie’s Squad is out now! 🎙️💜🩵

In this episode, we sit down with Hanna Baskin of the Toronto Sceptres to reflect on her time in college at UMD and the importance of creating a team culture where it’s okay to talk openly about mental health.

From navigating the challenges of being a student-athlete to supporting one another on and off the ice, Hanna shares her perspective on building a culture of openness and connection.

We also talk about her role as a Sophie’s Squad ambassador and what it means to help bring mental health conversations into sports.

Figure 8’s are a great movement challenge for athletes and follow a progression from tight-radius ➡️ wide-radius

A tighter curve requires slower speeds but more demand on ankle mobility, while wider turns allow for higher speeds

@coach_lajeuness of @gvnperformance follows this progression to build the foundation at the beginning then add in speed as the program goes on

The loading: keep it light, only 3-5kg. Because these are hockey athletes, load is just a simple way to add variety while letting the Figure 8 still be the main challenge. And the resistance ➡️ assistance, going away from then toward the Sprint 2, is a fun variation

Cueing: stay as tight as you can to the turns

Try it with your own hockey or team-sport athletes
✅ Start slower/simpler/tight-radius Figure 8 then progress the circle size and speed
✅ Start conservative with the loading and add more as you see fit
