i learned to hate that hat less

it started back when i had a senior study hall. i forget the exact date, but it was somewhere around the first week of november. i begrudgingly signed up for an audition time in mr. christmas’s office, but only after i had watched zach matthew, under the duress of nelson’s reese’s loving stare, sign up first. somehow, by some force of determination that was most certainly not my own, i managed to actually attend this audition. i could not have possibly anticipated what the next three months of my life would look like.

hindsight is like a one way mirror. you look back at your past self and call them silly because they can’t see what’s in front of them beyond the rhythmic tic of the small hand of a clock. they lack perspective: perspective that opens a window to understanding the past for those who are willing but guards the future from those who seek to reach beyond. it shields the here and now from those who seek to circumvent its boundaries. nonetheless, just as one, if well enough trained, can spot a one way mirror despite being unable to see what it conceals, enough life lived and perspective acquired gains one the ability to spot presently the vague outline of what hindsight will eventually detail.

needless to say, i have not lived enough life to have this gift. my hindsight from the past three months is that john mark in the audition room, nervous beyond what words can convey, shaking in his boots, or the green pants and air jordan’s he wears every day (apparently), was really silly. he was not able to recognize that future him would look back and wonder why he was so consumed by that moment. but looking back, what allowed him to take that first leap, and what enabled me to continue stepping out of my comfort zone every single day in rehearsal, was faith.

so thank you every to single dang person in the cast and crew for making me laugh when i needed it most, making me cry on the way home from waffle house on closing night, and for being people who’s friendship, whose patience, support, love, and kindness have proven trustworthy and faithful. the show wouldn’t have meant anything if it weren’t for you. 😄💐

For the last 7 years this stage has become my second home. I am eternally grateful for every second I was given on the stage and every character I have had the privilege of becoming. It is so sad to say goodbye to something that has changed my life in so many ways and only for the better. I thank the Lord for these last 7 years in theater and the people he has blessed me with along the way because they have shaped every bit of who I am. To God be all the Glory.
