Founder of the experimental Kurdish literature publisher Henar Press, Aryan Omar Hassan, and researcher Hannah Fox are taking on the monumental task of building a database of Kurdish literature in English. Along the way, they have encountered difficulties of classification: where national borders become irrelevant, linguicide lingers, and the way writers identify themselves is complex and varied. In this essay, they outline how they approach building a robust archive and its importance, while wrestling with larger questions of responsibility, identity, and representation.

This piece is commissioned in tandem with Wasafiri 127: Solidarities, available to order online.

Today’s glimpse inside Sleeping in the Courtyard is a page from Rooz Mohammed’s graphic novel Between Two Rivers, translated by Halo Fariq and Hannah Fox.

I absolutely love her entire book and am thrilled to have a few pages from it included in this collection.

Rooz Mohammed lives in Slemani and studied graphic design at the College of Fine Arts-University of Sulaimani. She is the art and design officer at the nonprofit Hiwa Foundation. She is the creator of the graphic novel Between Two Rivers, which was chosen and funded by Goethe-Institut’s Spotlight Iraq project in 2020. Her PhD research is on Kurdish tattoo tradition, deq.

Halo Fariq was born and raised in Slemani, Kurdistan, where he currently serves as a major with the Peshmerga, the armed forces of Iraqi Kurdistan. In his spare time he is an avid translator, and he has translated more than thirty novels into Kurdish, including Yoko Ogawa’s The Memory Police and Haruki Murakami’s After the Quake. His poetry translations have been featured in literary journals including World Literature Today and Asymptote. He is the cofounder of Nawendi Befr, a publishing house dedicated to translating children’s stories and educational books.

Hannah Fox is a PhD student at the University of Leeds, UK. Her research focuses on literary representations of bibliomigrancy and censorship in twenty-first century world literature. She has co-translated various short stories and poems from Kurdish, with her work appearing in The Markaz Review and Rusted Radishes.
