Had SUCH wonderful time with a spectacular group at @hannahfinn 's contortion retreat. Loved meeting people I've been training on zoom with for two years, learning so much and pushing myself in terms of endurance and strength. Can't wait till next time 🎪❤️🎪❤️🎪

As we wrap up Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder Awareness Month, I'd like to call out that compared to the average population, circus artists, like dancers, are likely to have Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders.

It is the clinician's responsibility to listen carefully to the patient in front of them and be ready to be creative when it comes to addressing the concerns of patients with HSD. We can help our circus patients create more stability and strength through their whole range of motion AND to appropriately educate our artists to ensure they are getting the care they need for any symptoms of hypermobility in the musculoskeletal system and beyond.

While social media and the public may celebrate the hypermobility displayed by aerialists, contortionists, or hand-balancers, we need to be aware and support the stresses that these positions put on their bodies.

To my hypermobile circus artists, here is a controversial take: If you can't actively control the movement through the range you are demonstrating and you aren't making your living from doing it, then listen to Dr. Bluestein of @bendy_bodies and "Take a picture of your silly human trick, and then stop doing it."

Thank you to @hannahfinn for sharing her beautiful work, and for demonstrating great control and mobility through her full range of motion!

Please vote for us in @expmagsheff’s awards for Best Cultural Experience TODAY!

We’re proud to be listed alongside some amazing nominees who all make Sheffield the eclectic, creative city we all love.

Here are six reasons why we offer one of the Best Cultural Experiences in Sheffield...

1. Our new Accessibility Policy, prioritises the access needs of disabled communities in our programming, communications and venues.

2. Last year's Black History Month Exhibition, showcased the talents of local Black visual artists from all stages of their careers. Our programme will continue to champion marginalised communities.

3. Our support to artists: from our theatre programme of emerging artists to Artist Jam sessions, which offers free space for artists of any discipline to train and connect. In between August and December 2020, Artist Jam welcomed fire eaters, roller skaters, dancers, jugglers, rappers, videographers and many more!

4. Our sellout Hip Hop Horror Night event, Deli's first immersive theatre experience since reopening after the pandemic.

5. Our residency programme, which offers ring-fenced support to artists from underrepresented communities, disabled communities or whose work would struggle to find a home in a traditional theatre setting.

6. We are an inclusive and welcoming home to much loved groups and events across Sheffield, from @migmatfest to the home of @androandeve’s queer cabaret A Reyt Queer Do. We have been - and will be again- the go-to venue for a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for people from all walks of life.

"The ever welcoming Theatre Deli, home of Andro and Eve’s queer cabaret, A Reyt Queer Do, is a great place to find the best in new theatre, with plenty shows focusing on LGBTQ+ stories, and a programme exploring diverse voices. Home to excellent local festivals including Migration Matters, you can also catch some exciting Fringe shows before they make their way to Edinburgh. The venue is quirkily decorated, with level access and both gender neutral, gender specific and disabled toilets."

The Green House are a partner for Chochma חוכמה, the new show by Bristol-based @hannahfinn. Exploring themes of domestic abuse and antisemitism, it’s a brilliant example of how we can use art and performance as a means of processing trauma. You’ll be able to see the show at the Resolution Festival in London on 11th May. Link in bio to book tickets 💛

We've got the amazing @hannahfinn teaching Contortion for us.

Hannah is a well respected expert in the field of Contortion and considered a master of her craft. She teaches not only the exercises but also the anatomy and physics of Contortion, together with safety elements and how to protect yourself whilst you work on your Contortion goals. She is truly brilliant and we're so pleased to have her back at MAAC this year
