An Ocean and a Day by Hannah Richell @hannahrichell
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am a huge fan of Hannah Richell and went in blind with this book unfamiliar it was a memoir about loosing her husband Matt in 2014.

I was unable to put this book down. It was captivating, raw, brutally honest, reflective and profound.

The flow of this book allows the words and the emotional journey to engross and grip the reader. I read this book in a night unable to put it down.

This book truly moved my soul. I felt the pain, the disbelief of the tragedy, the loss, the emptiness and the world's pull that forces people to move when you just want to be swallowed whole.

This is the kind of book I could read a million times and still be captivated and find another hidden meaning. Thankyou Hannah for writing this book and putting your thoughts, experiences and into such beautiful words.

Highly recommend 💓

"An utterly riveting, moving and poignant memoir of grief and loss that will speak to anyone who's ever lost someone they love.

In 2014, author Hannah Richell was living a happy and fulfilled life in Sydney. Married, with two young children, she was in the middle of writing her new novel when the police knocked at her door to tell her that her husband, Matt, had been killed in a surfing accident at Tamarama beach. An Ocean and a Day is the riveting, intimate and poignant story of the journey she travelled over the first two years of loss, but it is also, more uniquely, an account of what happens beyond those early years, when time and distance offer perspective and hope.

Life-affirming and illuminating, An Ocean and a Day is a book about love and loss, marriage and mothering, healing and hope, and how we face the hardest days of our lives. It is a book that will make you draw your loved ones close, and maybe even leave you a little transformed."

A little writing update! 🥹📖🤎

I honestly can't quite believe I'm writing this, but I've been **shortlisted for the 2026 Richell Prize for Emerging Writers!**

When I found out I'd made the longlist, I was already completely shocked. I genuinely didn't think I'd make it any further, so to now be shortlisted feels a little surreal!

Having my work recognised like this has given me such a lovely boost of confidence in my writing, and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity.

I'm hoping to hear more in the next couple of weeks, but regardless of the outcome, I'm already so thankful to have made it this far. Even if I don't win, this experience has been such an encouragement to keep writing, learning and pursuing something I genuinely love.

Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in where you want to be and forget to appreciate how far you've already come. This has definitely been one of those moments for me. 🤎

A huge congratulations to all the other shortlisted writers, and thank you to everyone who has encouraged and supported my writing along the way!

✨ One Halloween night. One dead girl. Too many secrets. ✨

The prologue of One Dark Night by Hannah Richell starts with a bang, with the first chapter being equally captivating. We are introduced to ‘Sally in the woods’-a murdered girl in a white dress who haunts the woods. Soon, a girl's body is found at the exact location where Sally was rumoured to be murdered.

The story is told primarily through three perspectives- Detective Ben Chase, who is investigating the case; Rachel, Ellie’s mom and the school counsellor; and Ellie, a student at the same private school as the murdered girl, who seems to be hiding secrets of her own.

The book is eerie and spooky with twists you don’t expect. I had two suspects shortlisted, and I was so sure it would be either one of them, but when the final reveal came, I was totally blindsided. I liked that the chapters are short and that there was a map.

If you are looking for an atmospheric Halloween read, this book would be a good pick.

Thank you so much, @simonandschusterin for sending this my way.

QOTD❓What grabs you first in a thriller?? Is it the murder, the setting or the characters?
