phoenix.sun 📸 dieter hartwig 🌑 Phoenix.Sun is a solo choreography by Kasia Wolińska, developed in collaboration with musical composer and sound artist Heinali, video artist Denis Kozerawski, dramaturge Jette Büchsenschütz, and light designer Hanna Kritten Tangsoo, produced by Zuza Kubiak. It is born from the urge to set fires—choreography becoming a meditation on and an attempt at embodying the element, which is envisioned as cyclical, unstable, and immanent to all living matter. This multidisciplinary collaboration unfolds from an experience of personal collapse and a return to artistic practice—a phoenix act, engaging with art as a medium of relational testing and creative generosity against the exhaustion by/of cultural production. It proposes an intermedia space, inviting an audience to choose where and how to look, to co-create meaning through the web of sensations, textures, and images proposed by the artists. The work constructs a sensory and affective fabric drawing inspiration from the burning sculptures of Władysław Hasior and the abstract expressionism of Mark Rothko, while leaving its meaning open to the spectator. It resists a narrative line or singular point of view, attempting instead to generate a polyphonic experience woven with sonic, visual, and dance elements. It traces an embodied transformation through the body of a dancer who moves through various regimes of fire, cycling between arousal, exhaustion, and energetic renewal.

Ahead of the Berlin premiere of Phoenix.Sun at @tanzimaugust next week, dancer and artist/writer Kasia Wolińska (@wolinskaxx) talks to Kajet about fire as a force of destruction and regeneration, the entanglement of pain and pleasure in dance, and the precarious conditions of artistic production. What does it mean to create, perform, and believe when the world is already on fire—and what might still emerge from the ashes? 🌋

Phoenix.Sun is an intermedia communication/art, where dance, sound, light, and video unfold on parallel yet interwoven timelines, organised through cycles of de/recomposition, destruction, and renewal. It is a multitextural choreographic liturgy, in which fragments, patterns, sequences dis/re/appear to incite mourning, birthing, expanding and imploding, transformation in/through flames. It is an incantation against hope, giving rise to a structure of feeling that oscillates between wonder and despair. The dialectical nature of fire fuels this body-based process of uncovering and composing relations and affects that brim with contradictions, which bring forth a choreographed and persistently rehearsed jouissance at a historical moment when pleasure (for instance, that of the creative process) seems inseparable from pain (of planetary burning and personal burnout).

How can we create a dance work that explores human–atmosphere relations on stage, and how can this awareness inspire new ways of living?

Drawing on her experience choreographing and dancing in diverse weather conditions—wind, sun, rain—Renae Shadler has developed an embodied understanding of how climate affects physical, mental, and emotional states. During a residency at Creative Days Festival, she begins her new solo Behemoth—Part 3 of her Dance meets Aerocene trilogy with the Aerocene Foundation (initiated by Tomás Saraceno), working with aerosolar sculptures in response to climate change. Festivals in Italy, Poland, Denmark, Germany, and Portugal extend the dialogue between dance and ecology through workshops and discussions, creating a European exchange.

The family is under attack!
In a late capitalist hellscape of deranged DILFS, mad MILFS, sick sisters, warm brothers and enby siblings BEGGING you to get their pronouns right, we’re losing touch with traditional values!

According to the right, the family (and its “natural” hierarchies) have been under siege for decades now (which is weird because dad still can’t apologize.) Is the family in crisis? Is the family itself a crisis? They say that blood is thicker than water so let’s coagulate around these sticky questions together.

Queer and Present Dangers is an experimental talk show series by Olympia Bukkakis that examines the ties that bind us, the places we call home, and ways in which we can love each other. For this edition the topic is FAMILY and we’ll be joined by Ivy Monteiro, Edna Bonhomme and Maika Knoblich who will help Aunty Olympia throw the show together over four days.
