we forget.

we forget what we ate for dinner last week
we forget to drink enough water (lol)
we forget about the friend who needed us to check in on them

we forget.

we forget that every single breath we take is a precious, fleeting gift, given for it to be treated as such

forgetfulness. it breeds contempt

but this, i never want to forget

every moment i burst into tears in the practice room out of frustration. every night i stayed up, drilling every phrase, memorizing every vowel, translating every word…forgetfulness. it breeds contempt

there was a time i prayed to understand the direction of my own life. a time i prayed simply to be okay. a time i prayed to get into grad school, and doubted whether or not I even would…forgetfulness. it breeds contempt

another time i prayed to understand my voice; that nothing, and no one would hinder it— not even myself

so today, i choose to remember.
to remember the miraculous vocal breakthroughs. the crying laughing with my classmates until our faces turned blue

the long nights in the practice rooms, difficult conversations with teachers, the old lady that told me my voice made her remember why she was alive—
and yet
in this, the most memorable thing of all,
God’s undeniable faithfulness

He’s the One who held me when no one could.
The One who reminded me to lift my soft palette, and free my back each time I was tense in a performance

i prayed that He would teach me intangible things, things that couldn’t be taught by a teacher
but only a God

and everything changed in what felt like just a moment

to my colleagues, coaches, teachers, professors, family, and friends, each and everyone of you:

i will never forget you
this experience with you has taught my voice that it is loved beyond measure,

& that i should treat it as such.

Congratulations to my cousin @splitdecision_99 on marrying the love of his life @kabrione_94 in a magical, love-filled celebration at the most enchanting castle in Negril, Jamaica!
