•The Priory of the Orange Tree•

Ugh! How dare this not be a massive hit for me. I curse thee!

The Priory of the Orange Tree has so many elements I love in epic fantasy - dragons, mages, strong female characters, political intrigue - with a TON of worldbuilding including myths, legends, religions…

Unfortunately, TPotOT was quite underwhelming and no one is more disappointed than me.

I still have a hard time pinpointing exactly what didn’t work for me, but I believe it’s an accumulation of many things:
• Unnecessary POVs.
• Inconsistent pacing.
• Not enough dragons.
• Nearly every character has a secret history/twist.
• Overly convenient plots.
But above all else… towards the end of an 800+ page novel, I realized I didn’t like ANY of the characters. There was absolutely no emotional attachment.

Many of my booksta friends absolutely love this so although it wasn’t for me, it might be for you.

Hallelujah for buddy reads! Thanks for the motivation and chat ladies (tagged).

Tired Mammy Book Club summer lunch 2025

Today’s TMBC lunch coincided with National Book Lovers Day, handy and totally planned, not a coincidence at all.

We’d a lovely afternoon in @sabarestaurantdublin, where the food and service were amazing, as always.

A few people missing and a few new faces, lots of great chats, an excellent book swap of preloved books, and plenty of boomerangs! 🥂

Looking forward to the next one (possibly Christmas at this stage!)

I’ve been having an unbelievable run of buddy reads this year, and diving into the Daevabad trilogy has only cemented that for me! Mid way through book two, but this series has been an unputdownable read - the thought and care that has gone into developing the world and the characters is unmatched, and I am constantly pausing to look something up and see what historical reference etc it is pulled from. Besides the deep worldbuilding, the he characters themselves are so compelling with their own individual stories, and their combined affect on the plot. Ali is now one of my favourite fantasy characters, and I find myself dying to get back to the world every time I close the book!
Without spoilers: the first book follows an Egyptian conwoman who discovers, accidentally, the secret world of the djinn and her new life in the city of brass, Daevabad as she struggles to manage magic, politics and a grim family history. For anyone who likes historical fantasy with a Middle Eastern twist, and for anyone who is dying to discover a rich and detailed fantasy story!
Thanks to @hapennybooks and the daevabaddies chat for making this such a great buddy read ❤️

🏹 The Hunger Games 🏹

For a trilogy that is based around organised games where tributes fight to the death in the distant future, the themes of oppression, war and injustice that permeate these books could not be more relevant. I’ve reread this trilogy as part of a Buddy read with #TheHungryDames and I’ve been glued to the pages. I’m seeing it said a lot on here that people have not read these books so if that includes you, please take this post as a not so subtle nudge to pick them up.

Katniss Everdeen wins the hearts of the nation when she volunteers as tribute to replace her sister in the annual reaping at the beginning of book 1. What follows next is a story driven by the power of hope, love, and justice. The Capitol, host of The Hunger Games, is driven by the agenda to control others, oppress the poor and weak, and entertain themselves. District dwellers are seen as meaningless scum, simply there to be tortured, starved, and serve a functional purpose for the Capitol.

I find it genuinely insane to think that Suzanne Collins wrote these books so long ago. There are so many passages in these books that are incredibly pertinent to our world today. Collins states that “collective thinking is usually short-lived. We’re fickle, stupid beings with poor memories and a great gift for self-destruction.” I think anyone would find it hard to argue with this. Our world is crumbling in so many ways and it is terrifying to watch, but it feels as if Suzanne wrote these books almost prophetically. Nothing changes if nothing changes. We must call out wrongs and remember our shared humanity. Otherwise, to put it quite simply, the odds will never be in our favour.

Happy Galentine’s Day! 💕

Today is the start of the Crescent City buddy read and I’m so excited! This is the third Sarah J Maas group read I’ve hosted now in the last year. I never expected for this to grow legs like it has and to have so much fun with my reading pals! There’s always space if anyone would like to join us.

The others in the group suggested today as a good day to start - I hadn’t even realised today was Galentines day 😆 House of Earth and Blood is such a fantastic book about female friendship - the perfect read. I got these gorgeous flowers today from one of my own pals as I recover at home from surgery - all well! Think a little SJM will help.

Have you read this book?

Okay, I don’t remember who I saw do this, but thought it would be super fun so I’m jumping on the bandwagon! Here is the #emotionschallenge also I am keeping these very specific to my reads of 2024 because otherwise I will have too many books for each category 🫣

🫣EMBARASSED - a book that everyone seems to have read but you haven’t : may be #intermezzo by #sallyrooney but I don’t plan on reading it anytime soon because I have 2 unready Rooney’s on my shelf to tackle first
