'This is my house'

Anbil Avan - An almost rewarding action romantic thriller that compensates for the extensive runtime with solid chemistry from the lead pair and splashes of set-ups and pay-offs. Starting off, Ashok Selvan is as impressive as always, be it an emotional breakdown scene before the interval, a cheeky smile while deceiving an officer, or even the body language for the action set pieces, competent as always. Next, Preity Mukundhan held her mettle equally strong too, with the chemistry between both Ashok and Preity as a married couple looking very much convincing on screen from the get go. Technically, the film boasts some bright talent, with Gowtham capturing the hilly landscape beautifully, while the art direction team makes the house feel like a living character. Musically, Govind Vasantha has produced some great romantic songs, and along the way, the background score was functional most of the time. My favourite pick has to be Peter Hein for transforming Ashok Selvan through the action stretch at the end, with RK Selva stitching the piece together impactfully despite the length being overblown. Last but not least, Director Kaarthikeyan, also credited as the screenplay writer along with Ashok and Vignesh Raja, has taken up a run-of-the-mill plot and enhanced the screenplay with some really invested set-ups and pay-offs. The flipside of this film is the evident tight-budget presentation that doesn't allow the film to take off fully commercially and keeps it grounded till the end. On the whole, Anbil Avan is another good choice from Ashok Selvan despite leaving you wanting it to be even more explosive and live up to its potential.
