Beautifully evolving over the last several years, this most recent 2008 bottle seems to be reaching an apogee with everything in its place. I agree this can hold for more years, but why hold further when it is oh so good today with its blend of primary, secondary and tertiary notes. #SoCharles 🎩

This photo was taken in 2019 of ‘Les Nogers’ a sublime cuvée from the talented grower Adrien Dhondt located in the Côte des Blancs of Champagne.

Back then this bottle was sourced for around 70 USD. Today it ranges no less than 210 to high 300s.

When markets explode like this the end consumer and more specifically those passionate for wine suffer most. Instead of expanding the awareness of the producer and its cuvées, the opposite occurs. Its a simple result- A wine that one was afforded the opportunity to enjoy occasionally becomes a ‘once a year’ treat or worse an asset to sell. We slowly lose touch with the magic that bottle brought and the name becomes another entry in the catalog of an auction house. The joyful wine experience shared with friends passionate about wine instead becomes an object for the few where braggadocious overtones drown over the rest.

The vintner’s duty is much the same: stewardship of the soil, and the patience to wait for a vintage we may never live to drink at its peak.

The Subject: Château-Figeac 2020.
A vintage of introspection. Rooted in deep gravel—not the de facto limestone of its neighbors—Figeac takes the solitary road of terroir. With its signature broad roped shoulders—a Cabernet dominance most rare on the Right Bank—it stands structural, austere, commanding.

It reads like architecture. Deliberate in the best sense.
Never performed.

A glass monument that will outlive us all—a burial gift to the future, laid down in darkness like an ampoule in the soil; entrusted to us in passing, never owned.

Old World patience… in an infamous New World rush.

We recently enjoyed our annual holiday dinner with Eric, Debbie, Marcus & Ana. We’re not even sure how many years it’s been, maybe 6-10 yrs lol. This year we decided on Dunsmoor Bar in Glassell Park. It’s such a great spot, Eric & Debbie are regulars 😁 … warm, rustic, and full of that comforting heritage-cooking vibe that makes every dish feel soulful and intentional. The space has this cozy, welcoming energy, the service is friendly and genuine, and it just feels like one of those LA places where you instantly relax and enjoy being there. If you haven’t been yet, definitely worth adding to your list.
