OUR FLAG IN AMERICAN ART: 1935–2026

Beginning at Harmon-Meek Gallery in Naples and continuing through the Museum of Art – DeLand, my painting United We Stand has traveled across Florida as part of this historic exhibition celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.

On September 1, the final chapter of this three-exhibition journey opens at the Polk State College Winter Haven Fine Arts Gallery.

It has been an honor to see this painting exhibited alongside works by artists spanning nearly a century of American art. Thank you to Harmon-Meek Gallery for including my work and carrying this exhibition into three remarkable spaces.

I am honored to have my painting in this historic exhibition “Our Flag in American Art 1935-2026” at The Museum of Art DeLand in collaboration with Harmon-Meek Gallery.

This is a multi-generational exhibition spanning nearly a century of artists exploring one of the most iconic symbols in our culture. @harmonmeekgallery @moartdeland

Artist statement for my piece below:

As an American citizen, the culture and symbolism of the United States have always been part of my identity. This work began from a place of curiosity: a desire to explore what it means to make my own mark on the nation and culture that shaped me.

The layered visual language throughout the flag reflects the layered nature of life itself. Our experiences, beliefs, and perspectives are constantly overlapping and evolving. While the composition appears chaotic up close, the marks stretch across the entire surface of the painting, creating a unifying visual rhythm. For me, this represents the possibility of unity even within difference.

My mark-making is also influenced by the modern age, where we are surrounded by an endless stream of opinions, voices, and information. The painting acknowledges that confusion while ultimately pointing toward something hopeful - the enduring human spirit and our collective drive to keep striving for something better.

I’m proud to be included alongside artists such as Hunt Slonem, Will Barnet, Adolf Dehn, Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso, Reynier Llanes, Jessica Daryl Winer, and others.

Beautiful museum install photograph.

“Our Flag in American Art 1935–2026”
On view at Harmon-Meek Gallery May 2026. Traveling to the Museum of Art- Deland, June 2026
My painting is entitled “Celestial Seamstress: Homage to Ángeles Santos Torroella” 45 x 45 inches, Oil on canvas. “Celestial Seamstress” is my homage to the artist Ángeles Santos Torroella (Spanish, 1911–2013), who had the courage to paint her vision in “ Un Mundo” ( which inspired this work) untethered by permission or precedent. Her work was not tentative; it was universal, expansive, and deeply intuitive—as if she were stitching together inner and outer worlds with quiet authority.

In this painting, I imagine the seamstress as a maker of universes—threading light through darkness, mending what has been unseen, and illuminating what has yet to be understood.

This is not only a tribute to her extraordinary achievement at such a young age, but to the enduring, universal force of creative vision—one that transcends time and continues to guide us. #angelessantostorroella #figurativepainting #womenartists #unmundo #reínasofía
A reflection on history, memory, and the fragile threads that connect us across generations.
Wishing everyone a meaningful Memorial Day weekend.

The year is 1975. The location is a prominent gallery in Naples, Florida. Harmon-Meek Gallery. They assembled a “once in a lifetime” exhibition of 20th century American realists.

It included Andrew Wyeth, Raphael Soyer, whom the New York Times called “the dean of American realists” and hangs in the Met, and Lowell Nesbitt considered “the father of modern realism.” Aaron Bohrod. Robert Vickrey. Martha Mayer Erlebacher. And so many more.

Then, at the bottom of the second paragraph, amongst the “artists who have gained more recent regional reputations,” you find Laura Shechter.

She was 31. She had been painting for over a decade. She wasn’t the cover of the catalog. She was the last name in the second paragraph. But there she was, in the room.

She wasn’t the cover. But she was there, in the room. A spot she had earned. A gallery that showed her work for the next three decades.
