Stolen from @bookminxsjv, my forever fave, these are the ten books I’m planning to read by December 31st.

A sort of eclectic mix but my reading vibe is very romcom forward at the moment. Also if Annika Martin writes it, I will preorder it, even when it doesn’t have a cover yet.

Of course this lofty reading claim could easily get derailed by some of the shiny 2027 proofs that are coming in. Or I might fall into a dark mafia romance K(U)-hole. It’s impossible to say. 🤷🏻‍♀️

What’s on your year end reading lists?

Walk Towards The Joy - with Harriet Evans

Publisher, successful author and Taylor Swift fan, Harriet Evans joins us from Bath to tell us about the origins of her literary life and how being a catastrophist has helped her tell the stories that have earned her awards and legions of loyal readers.

Regaling us with stories from the heyday of publishing in the 90’s, Harriet talks candidly about her love of books, her total lack of snobbery when it comes to a good story and how it feels to have insights as both a publisher and a writer.

Describing herself as talismanic, and always taking pleasure in small things, Harriet was inspired by her glamorous American mother-in-law to write The Treasures, the first in the Seven Stones trilogy. It’s a sweeping, gripping tale of romance and secrets and starts with the main character’s daughter uncovering some hidden treasures, which is why Harriet is such a perfect podcast guest.

She brought some for her own treasures to show us, including a heavy gold ring that she describes as wearing a Barbara Hepworth sculpture on her finger, and doubles as a fidget spinner, as well as the beautiful Swiss watch she bought herself when she got her first book deal. It’s a reminder to her and to her young daughters that it’s important to be financially independent as a female, but also to remember to buy yourself treats.

Harriet tells us the emotional story behind the precious gold bird necklace that was secretly gifted to her by her scary boss after she published her first book. She also sports a Taylor Swift friendship bracelet and tells us why it annoys her that Taylor gets criticised when she’s so massively talented.

Obsessed with Golden Age of crime and Dorothy L. Sayers, Harriet’s second crime novel, Murder on The Royal Crescent is out at the end of October and is a perfect novel for Christmas.

Harriet says that her mantra is to walk towards the joy and to make sure to try to do things that make you happy.

A lovely time had at @burylitfestival yesterday appearing on a panel with @emilyitami @harrietevansauthor chaired by @isabelle_broom to talk all things family. Also please enjoy the picture of these mid 20th/late 19th C pots that I found in a vintage junk shop enroute to the venue. I thought to myself, do I love these pots enough to lug them to the festival and then back to my car? And the answer is that I will never pass up a good pot. I don’t have it in me. Actually can see my cremated remains ending up in the one on the right. I think it would be quite fetching.

Huge thanks to super woman @mskatesawyer for organising the lit fest. I don’t know how she does it.

Such a brilliant afternoon at @burylitfestival chatting to @isabelle_broom_author, @harrietevansauthor @jodiechapman about family, place, secrets, identity, and feel like we only scratched the surface. Huge thank you @mskatesawyer and all the event organizers for hosting such a varied, vibrant festival ❤️

How amazing are these sketches from @artisteloise captured during a brilliant conversation between @harrietevansauthor and @louisalouisayoung in which they discussed the extraordinary privilege and responsibility Louisa felt of continuing another writer’s world, how being a relative of Howard meant she was best placed to continue these characters, how she found her way into the voices readers have loved for decades, and what the Cazalets still have to tell us about families, history and the enduring human need for story.

Thank you @artisteloise for allowing us to share these and for Louisa and Harriet for such a captivating afternoon.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, We have partnered with Penguin Random House SA to share stories that can help children explore feelings and emotional wellbeing. ✨

Each week, we’ll feature a children’s book that can open up conversations about emotions, build empathy and help young readers feel seen. 📖

We’ll also celebrate the role libraries play; safe & welcoming spaces where children can discover stories, ask questions and talk about what’s on their minds.

Did you have a book growing up that helped you understand your feelings—or do you have a favourite you’d recommend to a young reader? Tell us in the comments. ✍️

You can find these amazing books as well as many others on the Penguin Random House SA website!

Follow along for our first book recommendation next week. 👏

If you’re thinking about what books you might be reading as we head towards Christmas (I know…. Sorry!), then add this one to your list!

‘Murder On The Royal Crescent’ is a delightful cosy crime that follows detective Dora Wildwood as she is summoned to Bath to and becomes involved in investigating a murder and one that occurs 20 years later, in 1936.

I really enjoyed the different, somewhat extravagant characters through out this book and Dora herself is a gem, I feel I bonded with her over a shared love of peppermint creams!
The setting of Bath is really well written and you can get a feel for how it would have been at the time.
At times the Austen v Brontë debate that happens throughout the book felt like it didn’t need to be as stretched out. But this aside, I really enjoyed this book, particularly the second half as the story really got going.

A cosy crime mystery with Agatha Christie vibes that can be enjoyed anytime of the year, not just at Christmas! Perfect to snuggle up with!

Thank you @vikingbooksuk and @harrietevansauthor for this advanced proof copy ❤️
