For this upcoming series I wanted to consider the effects of colour on an image and where better to start that than with the colour theory of the Bauhaus. Johannes Itten, a professor at the German school of art, recognised the potential for colour to extend beyond the purely aesthetic into some primordial and spiritual realm. His criticism argues that ‘Color is life, for a world without color seems dead. As a flame produces light, light produces color. As intonation lends color to the spoken word, color lends spiritually realized sound to a form’. Itten’s theories, which would later inspire much of the Pop Art movement, have had such a monumental impact on the way that I view colour that I couldn’t resist editing these images with reference to his work. Hopefully, I’ll talk a little more about Itten’s colour theory in a future post but in the meantime I hope you all enjoy this! 💛💜
