Youth Riders Talks #06 | Harry, 14

The final stage of the European Junior Cycling Tour Assen was over, but there was still time for a few questions!

I caught up with Harry @harry_carmont , 14, in Assen, Netherlands, to talk about youth cycling, racing and life as a young rider.

And of course, the question I’m asking everyone: what’s the hardest thing about being a young cyclist?

Youth Riders Talks, together with @precisionfandh . New rider every week.

I've been coaching the elite female team at Ayat Airwerks Racing for the last two years. I've worked with plenty of different teams in the UAE over the years, and this one is by far the most professional, well-organised and supportive. It's run really well, and the management have all of the cyclists' best interests at heart.

Janis gave me complete freedom with my coaching and with the girls, and it's something I massively appreciated and respected. I've been coaching Harry for three years now and I really believe in this young man's potential. He spoke to me about a potential new team, and I knew that if I could get him a ride at Airwerks, he'd be surrounded by a caring management team and a great bunch of cyclists who all help and support one another. We had the phone call, we put things in place, and today Harry has officially signed on the dotted line as a member of the Ayat Airwerks Racing Team.

This is the most excited I've been for Harry in a long time. It's a team that's going to do wonders for his development. Thank you to everybody involved.

Europe 2026✅

Big thanks to @flandersdevo1 and @newenglanddevo for such an amazing experience and for all of their guidance and support. From crashing with motorcycles and hopping curbs in sprints to getting lost in big tourist cities this month was absolutely incredible!

The European Junior Tour of Assen has been Harry's main goal of the season for the last three years. This year, we came into the race with a lot of knowledge around the competition, the course demands, and what was needed to secure a top five position.

Deep down, Harry wants to win the event, but the goal was a top five. He didn't just achieve that. He won a stage, put in an outstanding performance in the green jersey sprint competition, and saw a massive improvement in his time trialling.

Physiologically, Harry is a fairly unique rider. I'd class him as an all-rounder. He's not a pure sprinter, but he has a really good turn of speed. He's one of those cyclists who adapts to whatever we put our attention on. Whatever area we dedicate our training time to, his physiology shifts.

I didn't want him to lose his sprinting ability, because that's a key component of success at the Tour of Assen. So I focused on driving his critical power first. The plan was to overreach in that area, so that when we started to shape him into the right racer for the tour, we had some room to move.

Here's the reasoning. Whenever you improve a cyclist's sprint, there's a trade-off between the aerobic and the anaerobic. The more you develop the sprint, the lower the critical power goes. So the plan was to push his critical power well beyond where it needed to sit, then turn him into a strong sprinter/all-rounder. When his sprint capacity went up, his critical power dropped as expected, but because we'd overreached to begin with, it settled at a much higher level than it would have if we hadn't trained it this way.

The results. Harry won a stage, made a big jump in his time trial performance, and finished fifth on GC. An outstanding performance all round, and I couldn't be prouder of this young man as we approach a beautiful three years of working together.

First stage: It was quite tough, but I managed to find a good rhythm. In the end, I finished in 4th place.

Second stage: A calm start. I saved my energy and waited for the final sprint. I was blocked a bit during the sprint, but I still managed to take 2nd place. Stage 3: It was a pretty hectic race. There were frequent sprints and breakaway attempts. I lost a bit of time at the end, but I still managed to cross the finish line in eighth place.

Stage 4: Time trials really aren’t one of my strengths; the fact that I finished 16th, 1:15 off the pace, shows that.

Stage 5: The last chance to make a move in the GC. I tried several times to break away on the cobblestones. I managed to get clear with a group of six for half a lap, but unfortunately, we didn’t succeed in staying away. I only managed an eighth-place finish, and I ended up 13th in the GC.
