BTS. Civic Grid’s architectural battery installation in Cannington, ON.

Making energy more available and livable. The project lowers the building’s operating costs while adding electrical capacity and backup capability to the site. Community outlets and lighting are available 24/7, and stay on during a blackout.

@maxfine brought his dream to life today with this incredible community square and battery installation.
The first of its kind, it seamlessly integrates energy storage with a public gathering space, proving that modern infrastructure can enhance communities while supporting sustainability and resilience.

It’s already becoming exactly what it was designed to be! A place where people can charge their mobility, scooters, phones, and other devices, gather in a safe, well-lit space, and know that free power is available whenever they need it (even during a blackout).

Even more meaningful, this system helps keep energy costs low for the nonprofit it serves, allowing more of their resources to go directly back into the community.

If you’re ever driving through Cannington, Ontario, take a minute to stop by and check it out on the main drag. It’s a beautiful example of what happens when brilliant engineering is paired with a genuine desire to serve others.

I’m so proud of what @maxfine @civicgrid @harskamparchitecture @j_self have created, because it turns out batteries are a vibe. ⚡️🔋😎

When the Portuguese grid crashed last April, Lisbon was forced to confront how a city can function without electricity. This led to the @civicgrid design team (myself, @maxfine and @harskamparchitecture) collaborating with Lisbon’s Civil Defence.

The prototype shown here, nicknamed “Muster”, is part of a deployable network built for real urban crises. It represents a next generation of emergency infrastructure — combining solar charging with a battery for continuous power, outlets for community charging, shelter, lighting and on-board storage for essentials like medical supplies. It can operate independently or connect into a wider mesh network for public announcements and local cell reception. It is compact enough to transport in a vehicle and light enough to be moved on foot by a one person. Following its public debut at @trienaldelisboa, it will be handed over to the Civil Defence for active operational use.

Resilience isn’t just about delivering essential services when systems go down — but also creating meeting points that feel approachable and reassuring.

Civic Grid was included in the @royalacademyarts summer show (thanks to @farshidmoussavi @stephmacdonald6a @tomemerson6a)

@civicgrid is an ambitious Canadian startup reimagining how clean energy infrastructure takes form in cities. It aims to advance the urban energy transition by developing decentralised, local systems conceived as civic architecture.

The flagship prototype is currently under construction and slated to open later this year. I’m so grateful to work with the immensely talented @maxfine (founder) and @harskamparchitecture (architect) – a really rare example of totally collaborative design and seamless teamwork.

our @vsp.consignment private offices & showroom is layered with custom details and colour. The sofa, custom designed to bend with the needs of the room. L-shaped mirrors with integrated light that gently hug drapery. Organic modular display tables that can be re imagined into different configurations….each moment executed with intention.

The unexpected use of drapery helps to soften walls and alter the experience of each room. It adds texture and warmth intended to create a sense of enclosure and intimacy.
