🩺 ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Haru Okuda, Class of 1990

From TJ's Organic Chemistry lab with Dr. Lieberman, to leading the future of medical training — Dr. Haru Okuda has built his career on making healthcare safer through simulation.

He's CEO of USF Health's Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), a 90,000-square-foot training facility, and Professor and Vice Chair of Emergency Medicine at USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

Earlier, he led national simulation strategy for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs across 165+ facilities and directed simulation training for NYC Health + Hospitals, the nation's largest public health system.

An emergency physician (Brown, New York Medical College, Mount Sinai), he's a Fellow and Past President of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, co-creator of the SimWars™ competition, and author of Emergency Medicine Oral Boards Review Illustrated, with 15,000+ copies sold.

Now his focus is AI, extended reality, and 3D tech in healthcare education, with partnerships spanning Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.

What does healthcare simulation mean to you?

For each of us, the answer is a little different. For some, it means preparedness. For others, it means patient safety, confidence, teamwork, innovation, or making sure healthcare professionals are ready for the moments that matter most.

For all of us, it means better care for patients.

This Healthcare Simulation Week, our team took that message to Capitol Hill. 🏛️ We shared our stories, our passion, and the impact of simulation—and we advocated for the investment needed to bring this work to even more communities.

Because simulation isn’t “just training.” It’s a way to prepare healthcare teams for the unexpected, strengthen our healthcare workforce, improve patient safety, and build a more prepared healthcare system.

And if we want change, we have to advocate for it. We have to show up. We have to tell our stories. And we have to make sure policymakers understand why this work matters.

So this week, we’re not just celebrating healthcare simulation.

We’re advocating for its future.

Today, we’re taking healthcare simulation to Capitol Hill. 🏛️

Because if we want healthcare to be safer, more prepared, and more equitable, we can’t just talk about change—we have to advocate for it.

The Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s accredited network now includes 278 programs across 49 states and jurisdictions, representing roughly 350 training sites. These programs are already embedded in communities across the country, including federally designated healthcare shortage areas.

Today, we’re asking Congress to recognize and invest in the power of simulation to strengthen healthcare preparedness, patient safety, workforce readiness, and our national response infrastructure.

For me, this work is deeply personal. I’ve spent much of my career building simulation programs, training healthcare professionals, and seeing firsthand what happens when we give people the opportunity to practice before they have to perform in real life.

If you want change. If you want improvement. If you want healthcare to be better—you have to fight for it.

So today, we’re showing up. We’re sharing the data. We’re telling the stories. And we’re advocating for the future of healthcare.

Today, USF President Rhea Law held her final official event as President of the University of South Florida — and we were honored that it took place here at CAMLS.

It was a meaningful full-circle moment. As Chair of the USF Board of Trustees, Rhea approved the creation of CAMLS. She later served as Chair of USF Health Professions Conferencing Corporation, the organization that operates CAMLS, before being named President of USF.

Her vision, leadership, and steadfast commitment to excellence have shaped CAMLS from the very beginning. That guiding influence will always be part of our mission as we continue advancing patient-centered care and strengthening our impact across Tampa Bay and beyond.

Thank you, President Law, for your extraordinary service to USF, CAMLS, and our community. 💚
