Thanks so much to the Harvard Center for Middle Eastern Studies (@harvardcmes) for the thoughtful gift of personalized sketchbooks, which I’m already putting to good use here in Brazil. More than that, thank you for being an intellectual home over the past 21 years. I’m deeply grateful for the community, friendships, and support—and I look forward to staying connected. #MiddleEasternStudies #HarvardCMES #LandscapeFieldwork #Brazil #Sketchbook

(Türkçesi aşağıda👇🏼) Harvard CMES Disaster Studies Initiative Colloquium is taking place this Friday @harvardcmes . I’m sharing two pages from @edanurkuntman ‘s illustrations for the Initiative along with the poster. Edanur’s work depicts Soma coal miners engaged in earthquake search-and-rescue efforts, based on oral history interviews I have been conducting since 2024. Drawing on their underground mining expertise with extraordinary courage and determination, miners saved many lives in the absence of competent state search-and-rescue response. This took place in the wake of the 2023 twin earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria, after which at least 55,000 people in Turkey alone lost their lives—deaths widely attributed to lax regulation dating back to before the 1999 Marmara earthquake, and a corrupt construction industry that has been central to the formation of a pro-AKP capitalist class since the early 2000s. Soma miners’ remarkable ability to mobilize so quickly after the quake is rooted in their unionization. The Independent Miners’ Union (Bağımsız Maden-İş), founded in 2018 by several of my interlocutors, has since played a transformative role in working-class politics and labor movements in Turkey and beyond—demonstrating to organizers worldwide that worker-led organizing is the most powerful force for historical change. I haven’t been this excited about a collaboration in a long time. ••• Harvard Ortadoğu Çalışmaları Merkezi Felaket Araştırmaları Girişimi Kolokyumumuz bu Cuma gerçekleşiyor. Afişi ve Edanur’un çizimlerinden iki sayfayı paylaşıyorum. (Devamı yorumlarda)

On November 4th, the Observatory for Palestine Studies (OPal) was officially presented in auditorium 306 of Building 4 at Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon, in a joint initiative of the research centers CEI-Iscte and CRIA – Network Center for Research in Anthropology. The observatory aims to establish itself as a space for research, debate, and academic cooperation dedicated to understanding Palestinian reality in its historical, political, social, and cultural dimensions.  The session began with an institutional introduction that included speeches by the director of CEI, Ana Mónica Fonseca, a representative of the CRIA board, Ruy Blanes, and the Vice-Rector for Internationalization of Iscte, Helena Carreiras.  Giulia Daniele, coordinator of the new Observatory, presented the objectives and lines of work of OPal, which aims to promote interdisciplinary and collaborative research on Palestine, connecting the European context to the Middle East.  A roundtable discussion followed with Raji Sourani (director of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights in Gaza), who participated via video conference, and Sara Roy (professor and researcher at Harvard University). Both guests highlighted the value of academic initiatives such as OPal at a particularly critical time for the Palestinian population, advocating for the need to produce critical and independent knowledge about the situation on the ground. The audience was filled with students, faculty, and community members, including the new Palestinian Ambassador to Portugal who also shared remarks and appreciation for OPal.
