Celebrating Harvey Pekar today on what would have been his 87th birthday. Here is his landmark indie comic debut, American Splendor 1, which celebrated its #50thanniversary anniversary earlier this year, having been self-published by Pekar in May 1976. Born in Cleveland on Oct. 8, 1939, Pekar began publishing American Splendor in 1976, with the help of artists Gary Dumm, Gregory Budgett, Brian Bram, Lad Jeric, and of course Robert Crumb. The original series ran 16 issues, with one issue per year until 1991, before Dark Horse began publishing the comics through the 1990s. The success of the 2003 American Splendor film led to DC publishing the series through its Vertigo imprint from 2006 to 2008. #onthisday #happybirthday #indiecomics #undergroundcomix
