Review: #VYMARA from EoM Contributor Michelle Swope.

For more than 20 years, creepypastas, horror stories, and urban legends about ghosts, cryptids, and other types of paranormal encounters, have been shared around the internet. Fans dress as their favorite creepypasta characters at conventions. Sometimes, the lines between fiction and reality become dangerously blurred. In one case, a young girl was stabbed by two of her friends who believed they could prove the subject of a creepypasta, Slenderman, was real by committing the violent act. For years, horror movies have been made about creepypastas, like Slenderman, including the recent box office hit “Backrooms” (2026). Now a new movie is relying on a viral, immersive Alternate Reality Game (ARG) based on a horror/creepypasta marketing campaign spread online prior to the film’s release. The campaign includes videos, stories of cults, and fake scientific posts on Reddit, TikTok, and other social media platforms which describe a strange, glowing, psychedelic plant called vymara, said to be found in the San Gabriel mountains and Los Angeles. It’s clever marketing for the found footage film “#Vymara,” an entertaining and fun horror comedy that combines Gen Z creator culture and original folklore, as it follows four failed influencers searching for a missing Youtuber whose disappearance is linked to the vymara plant.

In select theaters October 19th, 2026 only.

Last Tuesday I attended the premiere of my new feature @hashtagvymara This was a labor of love, shot in Westlake Village for two weeks this summer. This marked a couple of firsts for me, including my first full-length horror feature, as well as my first feature to have a national (albeit limited) release. See #VYMARA today, exclusively at AMC!
