WE DANCE UPON DEMONS is out today!! Perhaps fittingly, it comes out as yet another major abortion decision looms at the Supreme Court. If there’s one thing I hope you take away from DEMONS, though, it’s that despite everything there is always hope. You can find WE DANCE UPON DEMONS anywhere books are sold, and every copy sold helps fund reproductive rights around the country and beyond. There is ALWAYS a way to fight back!

(Thank you to @sagapressbooks, @joemountains, @jord4nhill, @newleafliterary, @luciennediver, and Sareena Kamath for making this book a reality!! 💜😈)

From the New York Times bestselling author of Kaikeyi, a galvanizing stand-alone contemporary fantasy following a burnt-out reproductive health care worker as she fights back against escalating attacks on her clinic and the malevolent forces in hot pursuit of her newly acquired power.

As a reproductive health care worker in Chicago, Nisha is barely staying afloat in the ocean of abortion bans, screaming protestors, and her own all-consuming depression.

When she escapes to the Indian art exhibit at her favorite museum for a brief respite, Nisha suddenly finds herself bleeding, disoriented, and collapsed on the ground. The last thing she remembers is the statue that beckoned her to touch it. In the days that follow, Nisha feels a strange power coursing within her, one that attracts a host of dangerous and enigmatic characters who covet it for themselves.

Facing threats both otherworldly and distinctly human, Nisha must navigate uncertain alliances to piece together the centuries-old mystery of her odd and terrifying abilities. And as danger closes in on her loved ones, community, and the clinic she’s determined to protect, Nisha must make a choice about the life she wants—and fight all the demons standing in her way to get it.

🔥 We Dance Upon Demons 🔥

Thank you @sagapressbooks for the gifted ARC!

We Dance Upon Demons was one of my most anticipated books this year. It did not disappoint, and it also took turns I fully did not expect. This book tackled themes of grief, depression, reproductive justice, the threat of Hindu nationalism, and so many other apt issues with grace and ease.

Nisha’s character is one that I think many 20-somethings will relate to. She’s consumed by her depression, hopeless in a world that’s burning, and dedicates her life to a cause (even if passively). I thought her motivations were clear and commendable, and LOVED the inter-generational aspect of this story. The magic system was fresh and exciting for someone like me who holds classical Indian dance very close to their heart. Kathak is sacred and Patel frames it beautifully in this story.

I also appreciate how Patel does not shy away from being unapologetically non-English in both the narrative choices as well as characterizations. There are Hindi and Sanskrit words that non-Indian audiences will have to look up to understand the story, and to that I raise a toast! Decolonizing the way you read includes engaging with immersive non-English language. But also, I loved the way Desi community is highlighted in this book! Patel speaks to the alienation that capital-obsessed Indian people can cause within already-fractured diaspora communities and how newer generations can rectify this.

I’d recommend We Dance Upon Demons to folks who enjoy literary fiction with magical realism, people who appreciate non-English as a form of world-building, and to those who believe that abortions are sacred.

Also shoutout to @nailsbycillag for my pop-art themed set to match this GORGEOUS cover 💜

Thanks to the lovely B^3 group members for participating in a buddy read of this book with me!
