It’s been two years since @haughtonspub ,the historic Kilmeaden pub, reopened!

I am very lucky to be in close proximity to this community-run pub in many ways, but getting to create their visual identity post-reopening in 2024 was very fun ⭐️🖤

Since reopening, the pub (& 13 locals who run it!) has been featured on the Irish Independent, WLR FM, Newstalk, RTE 2FM & most recently the Irish Farmers Journal.
Above is a brief overview of the project, visual reference points and the mural on the gable end.

There are few events in Ireland that bring together as many people from across the country as the National Ploughing Championships.

We were delighted to partner with the Irish Farmers Journal and Diageo for two panel discussions on the future of the rural pub at this year’s event.

Across Tuesday and Wednesday’s sessions, we heard from John Clendennen, Peter "Chap" Cleere, Brian Smyth, CEO of Irish Rural Link, Anne Dowling of Glenmalure Lodge, Conor McGuinness TD, agri-content creator Sophie Bell, and Ross Kavanagh of Haughton's Pub.

The discussions explored both the challenges and opportunities facing rural pubs and the communities they serve.

Topics included proposed tax credit supports, the role of government and local initiatives, rural transport, the contribution of alcohol-free offerings in tackling isolation, and how food can help rural pubs attract a broader customer base.

What came through clearly from both sessions was the vital role rural pubs continue to play as community hubs, bringing people together and supporting social connection in towns and villages across Ireland.

A country pub just off the Waterford Greenway that apparently has the smallest bar counter in Europe!
Haughton’s is a traditional country pub that had been run for decades by a couple and then closed upon their retirement in 2023. Locals missed this centre of the community so much that a few pooled together and reopened the pub under joint ownership.
The building is essentially a small cottage and the main bar area feels like walking into the old sitting room, complete with low ceiling and fireplace but also with the aforementioned tiny bar counter. It has been left untouched inside so is sparsely furnished and has a few bits of old advertising on the walls. Honestly this room is my exact idea of a country pub.
If you walk past the bar you see the half-door fronting on to the N25 that was originally the front entrance but as the road is so busy nowadays you enter from the rear now. Just past the entrance is another small room with a higher ceiling and stairs that is looked down upon by what was the bedroom originally, although the upstairs isn’t used for now.
There is a bigger lounge/music room to the right as you walk in the main bar that is much brighter and larger and has a lot more decoration, with a particularly nice display of musical instruments. Outside the main bars are the toilets and a nice, covered courtyard/smoking area.
Having driven by many, many times I finally managed to visit just after opening on a Friday evening in July 2026 and it was worth the wait. Although a few customers arrived later, it was just myself and a Swiss tourist in initially but as often happens in these small pubs we got chatting and he was as impressed as I was. The barmaid on the day was friendly and showed us around the rooms as she told us some of the history of the place. A great pint of Guinness cost €5.50 and my only complaint is that I couldn’t stay longer.
It’s a great little pub with a great story and I’m already planning to come back later on a weekend night to experience it when it’s busier.

A very old, small and amazing pub located just outside Kilmeaden.

Like going back in time in all the best ways. The bar is tiny, the seats are on top of each other and the patrons are full of music. Lovely staff, lovely regulars and top pints.

I've wanted to come here ever since I heard the locals bought it to keep it going and fair play to them for it.

In a time where these types of pubs ultimately have to close to no business, whether that be the fault of the price of drink, taxi costs or what - who knows.

Getting here at 6 bells to a mad stag on a mystery tour as if it was midnight, to them all shuffling on and the regulars pouring in for the music session that was to follow, capped with a sing song. What a spot.

Pay the taxi, get out to @haughtonspub and experience a pub that's on the same level for me as Jack Meades, Callahanes and Aggie Hayes.
