“Some of these kids come here, and they just need an accepting place. They need a place where they can relax. They need a place where they can feel seen around their peers if that's not the situation in their school or their home.” Supported by an OCF Creative Heights grant, Haunt Camp provides kids with an important artistic outlet in a rural community where such opportunities are scarce. By fostering creativity and collaboration, arts education is shown to enhance social and emotional development, foster civic engagement, and strengthen community connections. One of the many highlights of Haunt Camp was collaborating on the “How to Haunt Your Town” workshop with artist Sean Francis, who I had only met the day before. He kicked off the day by teaching participants ages 5-70 how to make zines by folding and carefully trimming one sheet of letter-sized paper. I was in awe of how easily everyone learned how to do this and the easygoing way he supported and encouraged everyone. @hauntcamp is so very special for bringing us all together. ❤️

During our Haunt Camp workshop, I worked with everyone to write and illustrate little magazines detailing ways to haunt our everyday spaces. (You can’t just haunt an entire town, that would be impossible! Instead, pick out a place you go to regularly, like the dentist or your home!) 👻 These are some of the zine cover pages for “How to Haunt Your Town”— the Enterprise, Oregon edition. @hauntcamp @josephycenter

Join us in Joseph! On June 17, we’ll host a free all-ages workshop that delves into the world of Haunt Camp—a unique, extracurricular program that teaches design, fabrication, and performance art to Wallowa County high school students.

What happens when a community bands together around a playful, creative cause? In this So Much Together workshop, program director JR Rymut will share how a rural community can be a perfect and unexpected incubator of avant-garde art.

Through activities and hands-on collaboration, we will learn about the vision of Haunt Camp as a multigenerational, community-wide performance piece and explore how to encourage non-artists to see themselves as art people. We will also have the opportunity to play a hands-on role in designing features of Haunt Camp’s upcoming 2023 production in Enterprise!
