At The Met’s College Night in May, two of our Fashion Design MFA students showcased their work in the 2026 Costume Institute College Fashion Design Competition alongside emerging designers from colleges across the country. The designs were presented to a panel of industry leaders, including Anna Sui and Ruben Toledo.

Congratulations to our winners!
• Samuel Bettencourt, first place, 3D Fashion Design Award
• Hanwen Liu (‘26), the People’s Choice Award

Bettencourt’s garment, inspired by connective tissue disorders, used draping and textile manipulation to convey the physical and emotional effects of chronic pain. “I can try to tell you how my body and disability feels … but showing you is much more intimate and beautiful.”

Liu explored bodily transformation through her design, noting, “My design is a metaphor for bodily and emotional consolation, as if the garment is trying to absorb and regulate an internal state ... moving between containment, armor, softness, and distortion.”
