We’re still thinking about this past weekend and how absolutely incredible it was to be surrounded by over 100 people who are as passionate about mental health and suicide awareness as we are. 💚 Incredibly grateful for @emilysylvestercreative for capturing these photos that we will be able to look back on for many years to come… Thank you all for your continued love and support, we are so grateful!!

Uganda Youth Brass Band gives condolences to the family of Derek Phillips

January 17, 2006 - September 8, 2026 🕊️

We in Namalere, Wakiso, Uganda never met Derek Phillips.

But today our 50 children bow our heads in silence for him.

Derek was 20. Mellophone player. Section leader. University of Iowa Hawkeye Marching Band. He did everything right.

Last Saturday at Kinnick Stadium, in the heat, as his band was about to take the field, Derek collapsed. Cardiac arrest. He fought for 3 days. On September 8th, his family said goodbye.

As a band who marches in bare feet, with 4 trumpets for 50 kids, we understand what it means to lug your instrument, to memorize music, to practice for hours in hot sun, to leave a pool of sweat behind when the uniform comes off.

Derek knew that discipline. Derek loved that family.

From Uganda, we want to thank Derek for his hard work, his love for his university, and his love for the Hawkeye Marching Band.

He was more than a Hawkeye - he was our brother in a global fraternity of millions who believe brass can keep a child in school, and music can keep a heart beating.

This Saturday, as Iowa wears black ribbons for Derek, our children in Uganda will also wear black ribbons at practice.

We send our deepest love to his parents Brian and Sara, his brothers Kyle and Alex, and to every member of the University of Iowa Bands.

Rest well, Brother Derek. Your mellophone echoes on.

- Dennis Wasswa and 50 children, Uganda Youth Brass Band In Namalere

After an amazing week at camp and a fun little side quest through Colorado and Nebraska, it’s time to get back to work. School season is getting closer, and every practice is another opportunity to perfect the details, upgrade my dives, and build confidence. The break was great, but growth happens when the work begins. The grind isn’t something I have to do…it’s honestly my favorite part! Back to the basics today. Championships are built long before competition day. Time to get to work. ♥️🔥#highschooldiver #highschoolathlete #classof2027recruit #2027diver #springboarddiver
