POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Podcasting has rapidly evolved into one of the most powerful forms of media, giving audiences direct access to conversations across news, politics, tech, and even niche topics.

According to Pew Research Center, over 50% of Americans tuned into a podcast last year.

But how many of those podcasts are created by Black voices?

Hayti is an app that is designed to reimagine the podcast landscape for Black audiences and creators.

Founded by tech entrepreneur Cary Wheelous in 2020, Hayti’s mission is to “aggregate news and information from black voices that need to be heard on a global scale.” Today, the platform tracks over 2,000 podcasts by Black content creators.

FUSION is on a mission to cover the narratives of the global Black diaspora--- from Africa to the Caribbean to the Americas and beyond.

Stay tuned for more and follow for your daily dose of the diaspora🤎

Mind blown at my first ever #GoogleIO! 🚀 So much innovation, especially with Gemini leading the charge. Millions of devs are now building with it, and the new SDKs/APIs are unlocking insane agentic capabilities. Plus, Gemini 2.5 means faster, cheaper apps – win-win! Loved seeing practical tools like Jules (coding agent) and Stitch (UI-to-code) in action and so much more...

Big shoutout to #WeArePlay for inviting @haytiapp along for this incredible experience!

Spotlight on Cary Wheelous, CEO & Founder of @haytiapp 🌟

Cary Wheelous is one of Durham Community Incubator’s (DCI) past winners (Spring 2024) and the visionary behind Hayti, a groundbreaking app amplifying Black voices globally. From breaking news to business insights, entertainment, and the Black Lives Matter movement, Hayti ensures the stories that matter most are heard as they happen.

Named after the historic African-American community in Durham, Hayti honors the legacy of a vibrant, self-sufficient Black neighborhood, often referred to as the “Black Capitol of the South” and home to the original Black Wall Street.

In a recent conversation, Cary shared how DCI helped propel his journey. The pitch event provided invaluable networking opportunities, allowing him to form lasting connections. The micro-grant funded marketing efforts that drove mobile user growth and supported key tech enhancements to the app.

💡 Cary’s Top Tips for Small Business Owners:
1️⃣ Leverage local co-working spaces—these are hubs for events, seminars, and connections with fellow entrepreneurs.
2️⃣ Seek mentorship—mentors can open doors to resources and help you navigate the local startup ecosystem. Cary found his mentor through NC Idea!
3️⃣ Find a strong financial partner—keeping your finances in order is critical for growth and stability.

We’re so proud to see Cary and Hayti thriving and making an impact! 💡✨

Still thinking about our event last night! ✨

Last night’s pitch event was nothing short of extraordinary. The room was filled with joy, passion, and resilience, as we celebrated the hard work and dedication of our four incredible entrepreneurs. Despite the rainy weather, spirits were high, and the energy in the room was unmatched!

A huge congratulations to Jimmy from Barbershop Therapy for winning the $900 micro-grant, funded by the generous donations of our amazing audience! 👏🎉

We’re also so proud to officially welcome all our finalists into the DCI Alumni family! Runbin, Kelsey, Nastacia, and Jimmy, your innovative ideas and heartfelt pitches inspire us all. 💡✨

A special shoutout to our past winners, Ami Patel (Gallery Box), Cary Wheelous (Hayti), and Judy Batista (Laughing Monitos), for coming back to share your stories and cheer on this year’s finalists. Seeing everyone network, exchange ideas, and support one another truly captured the spirit of DCI.

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and joined us for a night of community, creativity, and collaboration. A big shoutout to echo NC for sharing your space with us 🧡 Here’s to uplifting Durham’s brightest ideas and building a stronger, more connected community together! 💙
