Vessels of Memory: Sculptural Handbuilding with Hayun Surl

CELADON’s first Visiting Artist Workshop welcomes Korean-born ceramic artist Hayun Surl, Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Angelo State University. Surl trained in traditional Korean pottery and kiln firing before earning his MFA from Ohio University. His sculptural vessels draw from Gaya-period earthenware and Korean ceramic heritage, using clay as a record keeper of memory, place and identity.

Spend the day watching his process unfold. The live demonstration begins at 10 AM, and you’re welcome to join at any point. After lunch, stay for an artist talk and Q&A at 1 PM, followed by a reception with light refreshments as the demonstration continues.

Sunday, October 25 · 10 AM–5 PM
CELADON · 38 W 32nd Street, 7th Floor
$100 · Reserve at the link in bio

This is a demonstration-based workshop and does not include hands-on clay work.

Say hello to our new Visiting Resident Artist, Hayun Surl!

Originally from Korea, Surl spent two years on an apprenticeship in Korean traditional pottery and kiln design before he received an MFA in Ceramics from Ohio University. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Angelo State University in Texas.

His work looks to blend Eastern and Western techniques and philosophies, while embracing and challenging the norms of tradition. He explains, "I see my work as the creation of artifacts—objects that draw from my personal history and the archives I have collected and created."

During his residency at Belger Crane Yard Studios, Surl plans to create a new body of work to "explore the fluidity of cultural identity through large-scale ceramic sculptures."

We're grateful to have him in the studio, and excited to see the work he'll create. Stay tuned for behind-the-scenes and future announcements during Surl's residency!

Ceramic Artist Demo Workshop with exhibiting artists Wansoo Kim and Hayun Surl, in conjunction with The Uncanny In-Between

Exploring cultural identity through vessel figures

Ceramic artists Wansoo Kim @wansoo_kim and Hayun Surl @hayunsurl, both originally from Korea, explore shifting cultural identity through vessel and figurative forms, using clay as a record keeper of their journeys.

In this workshop hosted by the Blaffer Art Museum, each artist will demonstrate their distinct approaches, with Surl focusing on wheel throwing and Kim on handbuilding, while discussing how their processes reflect personal narratives and migration experiences.

For both artists, the dialogue between interior and exterior space serves as a conceptual framework for visual storytelling, expressing the diasporic tension and layered complexities of their Korean American identities.

12:00 – 1:00pm: Artist Talks followed by light lunch
1:00– 5:00pm Demonstrations

What if you had the ability to consider the entire artistic timeline of a millennia old craft, say Korean Ceramics? And then you create a body of work which seamlessly and profoundly uses that whole vernacular to build contemporary forms with modern techniques that feel alive and aware? You’d have to be Hayun Surl whose “Guardians” recently on show at Ivester Contemporary do just that. When I first stepped near the annex space of the gallery, I felt their presence. These anime deity shaped reliquaries are at attention, alerting you that they see you. The sculptures are dynamic and staid at the same time, ready to pounce and firmly grounded. Really wonderful work.
