Honestly, give me a hot genie, three wishes and a messy love life and I am sold! It was an interesting premise from the start.

I was immediately hooked by the cover! Scarlett's stylish outfit and that magical golden trail makes it seem like the perfect mix of glamour, love and fantasy in the busy streets of NYC.

Scarlett Monroe is already dealing with career disappointments and a less than satisfying relationship when a vintage perfume bottle brings Sahir, a ridiculously attractive genie, into her life. Billionaire. Rock Star. Super Model. Three wishes sounds amazing but what happens when the life you think you want is not the life that makes you happy?

I really loved the blend of work place drama, magic, romantic tension and self discovery. It makes the story fun and gives Scarlett something to work through.

The writing is lively, witty and a quick read. There is humour in Scarlett’s thoughts and reactions and I especially liked the modern rom-com feel.

The unique premise, Sahir’s charm and Scarlett’s relatable struggles are definite highlights for me.

Let’s be honest, a genie coming out of a perfume bottle is interesting enough, but a handsome genie? Well that certainly raises the bar!

This is the sort of book I’d pick up if I want to escape reality for a while, get some romantic butterflies and smile at some magical chaos.

I'd recommend it to readers who like fun romances, fantasy elements, handsome made-up guys, and stories about discovering what truly matters.

A genie in a perfume bottle, three wishes, a frustrating work life, and a relationship that might not be as perfect as it looks. Scarlett's life is already a mess when she discovers Sahir, but what follows is much more than a magical romantic comedy.

I loved how the story explores the reality of being a working woman. The pressure to prove yourself, the frustration of being overlooked, the anxiety of stepping into a bigger role, and that nagging voice asking whether you're really good enough. I liked how the author showed Scarlett - not as a weak person, neither unrealistic - but someone we all relate to.

And Sahir! Honestly, I want a genie too, but not for money, luxury, or a dream wardrobe. I want the moral support and confidence Sahir helps Scarlett discover in herself. I loved their rapport, the banter, and how their connection grows beyond the wishes. He doesn't just make things happen for her; he encourages her to question her choices and recognise her own capabilities. Their dynamic was easily one of my favourite parts of the book.

The story also makes you think about the difference between getting what you wish for and getting what you actually need.

My favourite part of reading this book? I have highlighted approximately 100000 things, and they're all so out of context when I try to share them! Some felt like a hug, some were my much-needed wake-up calls, and others genuinely made me laugh. And I'm talking about as small things as possible.

Also, Scarlett gets three wishes *and* so much extra magical assistance. Excuse me, where do I sign up? I would kill for that kind of support system!

Sahir grants her wishes and, of course, makes life a little easier. But what I loved most about him wasn’t the magic.

It was how he became her calm in the storm. ❤️

Sahir somehow always knows what to say, when to say it, and exactly how Scarlett needs to hear it. And honestly, those little moments between them were my favourite part of the book. Whether you are an avid romance reader or not, This is a rom com you do not want to miss ♥️

Also this song by Taylor swift seemed the best suited for this book- especially the line - Can I go where you go♥️

The Problem with Wishes by Hazel Calder has such a great setup—a stuck-in-a-rut professional accidentally frees a genie who turns her career upside down overnight. The premise is fun, and early on, the light and witty tone makes it feel like the perfect easy read.

The middle section, though, loses some steam. The plot gets stuck on a single work problem for way too long, and Scarlet ends up spiraling over the exact same worries repeatedly instead of making real progress. While her career frustration and lukewarm love life are super relatable, listening to her vent about them over and over gets a little tiring.

I also wanted the book to dig a bit deeper. When you have a magical genie in the mix, it opens up a great chance to talk about real life choices, figuring out what you actually want, and learning to back yourself. The book touches on those things, but only on the surface, keeping it more of a light corporate drama than the richer story it could have been.

Overall, It's still a quick, sweet read if you want something light to pass an evening with, but it leaves some of its best potential on the table.

The Problem with Wishes by Hazel Calder

Some books make you wonder what you would wish for if a genie suddenly appeared in front of you. The Problem with Wishes made me wonder something else—what if getting what you wished for wasn't necessarily the answer?

Scarlett is at a point where her career, relationship and expectations of herself aren't quite falling into place. Then Sahir enters her life in the most unexpected way, bringing a little magic—and quite a bit of chaos—with him. What follows is a light-hearted journey where Scarlett gets the opportunity to look at her choices from a completely different perspective.

I really liked the way the story balances the magical premise with very relatable emotions. Scarlett's desire to prove herself and find her own way gives the story more substance than just a straightforward genie-and-wishes romance. And Sahir? He definitely brings the charm. Their conversations and growing bond were some of my favourite parts of the book.

I did have one tiny question, though—how exactly did Sahir end up inside a vintage perfume bottle that was meant for a PR project? 😂 I have absolutely no explanation for that one, so I'll simply assume Scarlett has spectacular karma and choose to enjoy the story rather than overthink the logistics!

Overall, this was a fun, breezy read with romance, humour and just enough magic to make an ordinary-life story feel a little more whimsical. A good pick when you're looking for something easy-going and entertaining.

The Problem with Wishes is such a wonderfully odd idea for a rom-com that I was sold by just that! A genie appearing from a perfume bottle and becoming part of the life of a frustrated NYC beauty editor is not a combination I knew I needed until I read it.

What I especially enjoyed was how the book uses the wishes as more than just a magical gimmick. Scarlett’s career ambitions, relationship troubles and constant questioning of whether she’s actually happy make her surprisingly relatable. Her relationship with Sahir works because it develops from genuine companionship into something more romantic, rather than a quick 30 second romance.

The book is light and cozy, while still touching on real life.

I did feel the pacing dipped in the middle, but I think it's a very general rom-com thing, and not much to do with this book per se.
