Training this group has been such a blast the last few weeks!

The goal was to find extra reps and training for Gigi & Hazel before they head to college, and we ended up connecting with others, making friends, and having a lot of fun.

The last few years, I’ve headed to the Southbay of LA to train college bound athletes just before they head back to school. With my knee replacement keeping me closer to home, it was great to train this group in Ventura!

Everyone showed up with the same mindset: to get better, compete hard, and help the person next to them.

@hazelrichrd — Absolute stud on the court: so terminal and dangerous. But, the kindest demeanor ever on and off the court. Headed to Saint Mary’s to make an impact!

@gigi.scaglia — one of the best overall athletes I’ve stood next to. So proud of your work ethic and focus on leaving injury behind you. Off to LMU!

@sophiegrace.w (SBCC) — Love that you love beach volleyball; you’re an awesome spirit, and your best volleyball is yet to come!

@linamariiehu Lina — The little lefty that could. San Jose State is lucky to have you!

@shayyydeeee — Witnessing your growth has been awesome. It was special getting to train with you and finally be on the same team for a few practices. No doubt you’ll make a big impact at Masters College.

Char — Bummed you couldn’t come out more because of school starting, but it means the start of your Sandy Cougar Senior Season. Thank you for your commitment and hard work; let’s go big in 26/27.

@oliviasletten_bvb_2022 — So fitting that you jumped in for Hazel & Gigi’s last session. You’ve been a phenomenal coach/mentor to Gigi, Hazel, and all our Ventura athletes. From VHS alum/player to coach, you helped make Ventura Beach what it is.

Awesome group—onto the next chapter! 🏐💛

Last practice with these two incredible humans as they head off to pursue their Division I athletics dreams.

Hazel is headed to Saint Mary’s College, and Gigi is off to LMU. Both are moving into their respective dorms next week.

Hazel & Gigi brought amazing energy to every practice and match, and positivity to everyone they touched. I’m grateful for their commitment and loyalty over the years, too.

Injuries, disappointments, difficult times, failures, and successes were all part of the growth we shared, and I do mean “WE.” Hazel & Gigi stood by (or put up with) my birthing journey into Eco-D and CLA (Ecological Dynamics & Constraints Led Approach) coaching over the past five years, they were curious and supportive without ever doubting me when I strayed from the norm or complained about my creative scoring games (lol).

We all turned out OK. Gigi & Hazel are headed to play at a D1 level, and I’ve grown more confident as I’ve learned to fully embrace the Eco-D and CLA space (I can finally crawl).

I’ll remember some of the big matches we won together, indoors and on the beach, but I’ll mostly remember the smiles, laughter, and joy. I’ll also remember the feedback and honesty that helped make me a better coach (THANK YOU!).

The way Gigi and Hazel carried themselves both on and off the court will be a great example for future youth athletes. It’s been so much fun coaching you both, and getting to provide those final reps and practices before college has been an honor.

I’m excited to be your biggest fan and cheer you on. Proud of you both!💙

Building athletic qualities that transfer directly to the sand. 🏐⚡️

Developing lateral power & change of direction for court coverage, single-leg strength & stability for movement in the sand, and explosive/reactive power to improve approach, jumping, and quickness at the net.

Train the movement. Build the athlete. Let it transfer to the game. 📈
