Architect Hafsa Burtโ€™s (@hbaarchitects) answer to a changing climate begins with less. Set on a nine-acre site in Jackson, California, Null is a small private home conceived as both prototype and thought experiment for climate-resilient architecture. Designed through Burtโ€™s Box Lab initiative, the raised structure follows what she calls a โ€˜just-enough philosophyโ€™, stripping residential design back to what is needed across its programme, systems, materials and spaces. In a region prone to wildfires and significant temperature swings, the house uses no fossil fuels for its operations, while structural steel, carefully insulated walls and ceilings, and upcycled drywall and exterior wood cladding keep materials to a โ€˜bare minimumโ€™.

That thinking runs through the house from the outset. Null is connected to onsite solar power, oriented to make the most of its setting, while rainwater is collected in 2,500-gallon cisterns, with excess flowing to a reservoir. Systems are deliberately left exposed, giving the house an honest, machine-like quality and showing how it works rather than hiding it. For Burt, the experiment is about โ€˜a paradigm shift in residential programmingโ€™, with the small house now offering a prototype that can be replicated across different areas and terrains.
