Navigating the ethereal trails of our data-centric existence, @modem.works , in collaboration with industrial designers @hbas_co , manifest a bold answer to the age-old question of memory preservation with their project, "Heirloom Hardware". In an age of impermanent cloud storage and fleeting digital services, Heirloom Hardware imbues our personal chronicles of photos, videos, and documents with the tangible reality, an elegant retreat from our transient digital domains. The longevity of memories has been a ceaseless contemplation across time. Our rich histories, embedded with stories of wars, pandemics, and grand migrations, often encapsulated in precious heirlooms, speak volumes of our past. Yet, a quiet worry persists — how do we preserve these memories, these anecdotes of our existence, in a world where every minute detail of our lives is being uploaded to the capricious realms of the cloud, subjected to the precarious forces of corporate restructuring, software bugs, and energy consumption demands? Our hoarder tendencies have been amplified by the illusion of infinite cloud storage, obscuring the true cost of data storage and the real risk of losing our valuable narratives to the inevitable entropy of business.

COMMUNAL REPOSITORY — Like a cluster of handprints on a cave wall, the communal repository tells the story of multiple lives in their shared journey through time. The individual marks etched in copper across this community-scale repository evoke the intersecting narratives of public graffiti while also serving as instructions for future generations. — We entrust our most intimate memories to the cloud, yet we probably will outlive our storage providers. Modem teamed up with industrial designers HB-AS to design a range of storage devices that secure personal memories in the form of photos, videos and documents for generations to come. Heirloom Hardware offers a tangible alternative to transient cloud services. The second edition in the series expands upon the idea of community through the lens of creative co-creation, highlighting fourteen artists/designers who have been paired together to interpret a screen. An object in itself yet inherently spatial, a screen is an intervention in space that helps us frame new perspectives.  https://worksinprogress-sf.eventbrite.com MACLAC Building 198 Utah Street San Francisco, CA Sept 28—Oct 11 T—F 4—7pm S—S 12—5pm Opening party: September 28 at 6—9pm Graphics @m.c.madrigal

Works In Progress is an exhibition series curated by our cofounder Kelley & @kate.hands.co to amplify, archive and create dialogue around the Bay Area craft + design community. It has been an honor to work alongside this talented group of artists and designers that bring the show to life. Their work speaks for itself. Works In Progress II explores collaboration - 14 artists paired together to co-create a new piece for the show: a screen. These 7 screens are placed alongside pieces from each individual practice. The exhibition is on view through mid-October. Follow along @worksinprogress_sf and come by if you are in SF. @sahrajajarmikhayat captured the essence of the show through her incredible photos. But, before that chapter begins… We wanted to share some bts of a wild and beautiful few months working on WIP II this past fall, as well as the brilliant designs that each artist displayed next to their commissioned collaborative screens. Side note: many of these works are available for your home, public atrium, dentist office, or the best holiday gift in the world! Support these artists by bringing their world into yours 💌
