LONG POST ALERT:

My educational journey began at Tennessee State University(BA & MA) and reached its peak at Clark Atlanta University where I earned my Doctorate.

While my big sister, Cupcake (Mary Elizabeth Johnson), inspired my college path, it was the show A Different World The New Generation: A Netflix Series that lit the fire and desire in me to attend an HBCU. I saw myself in the characters and that campus.

I've always been pro my people (being unapologetically Black does not mean I am anti anyone else, simply means acknowledging embracing who God created us to be despite the noise of a world that seeks to oppress/diminish and silence our genius). Attending and serving at HBCUs for the last 20 years has only deepened that love and intensified my calling.

When I watched A Different World.
tears (tears of joy). It was also a reminder that I am living the exact dream God gave me as a 16-year-old girl from Memphis, TN. On our high school senior trip to Atlanta, we visited the Atlanta University Center (AUC). I wrote in future section of my yearbook that I would be a professor of Black Studies in the AUC within ten years. Believe it or not, just 9 years later at age 25, I received a call to teach at Morris Brown College (I still don't know who recommended me...God's plan).

Over the last two decades, I've had the honor of serving eight incredible HBCUs: Morris Brown College, Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Fort Valley State University, Cheyney University (1st HBCU), Alabama A&M Bulldogs, Philander Smith University, and now Edward Waters University.

When I say "serve," 1 mean it.
What I am doing and have done is hard work and heart work.

My title says Associate Provost/Tenured Associate Professor, but my daily reality is being a "mom away from home," a prayer warrior, a disciplinarian, a confidant, and a scholarship finder for my babies, and a plethora of other responsibilities. In fact, long after my babies leave me, they still hit me up for encouragement, advice, prayer, or for laughs.

Five years of celebrating Black men in medicine. 🩺
September 12, 2026 marks the 5th Annual National Black Men Physicians Day.

This day is about recognizing the Black men who have chosen medicine, the sacrifices they have made along the way, and the impact they continue to have on their patients, their families, and their communities.
Representation matters. Seeing someone who looks like you in a white coat can change what you believe is possible for yourself.

We honor those who came before us, celebrate those doing the work today, and continue to create opportunities for the next generation.
This is bigger than one person. This is about our community and the future of medicine.

Popcorn Lung: What Your 🫁 Wish You Knew

Your lungs could be scarring right now and you wouldn’t even know it. Popcorn lung, officially called bronchiolitis obliterans, is a serious condition where the smallest airways in your lungs become damaged and inflamed.

The name comes from factory workers who developed this disease after inhaling diacetyl, a chemical used to create that buttery flavor in microwave popcorn. Here’s what happens: the tiny air sacs in your lungs get scarred and narrowed, making it incredibly difficult to breathe.

Symptoms include wheezing, dry cough, and shortness of breath that doesn’t go away. The scary part? Once the damage is done, it’s irreversible.

While popcorn lung was first linked to factory exposure, concerns have risen about vaping products that contain diacetyl and other harmful chemicals. The condition develops gradually, so many people don’t realize something is wrong until significant damage has occurred. If you work in industries involving chemical fumes or use vaping products, pay attention to persistent respiratory symptoms. Early detection is crucial because while we can’t reverse the damage, we can prevent it from getting worse.

The Science Behind The Pulse Oximeter

Your fingertip holds a secret that could save your life, and this tiny device reads it in seconds. A pulse oximeter uses two beams of light, red and infrared, that shine through your finger to measure oxygen levels in your blood.

Here’s the fascinating part: oxygen-rich blood absorbs infrared light differently than oxygen-poor blood. The device calculates how much of each light wavelength passes through and determines your blood oxygen saturation percentage. That’s why you see those red lights glowing when you clip it on.

Your normal reading should be between ninety-five and one hundred percent. Anything below ninety percent means your body isn’t getting enough oxygen, and you should seek medical attention immediately.

The device also measures your pulse by detecting blood flow changes with each heartbeat. Hospitals rely on these during surgeries and for monitoring patients with respiratory conditions.

The technology is so precise it can detect changes within seconds. Now you know why doctors trust this simple clip-on device. It’s basically a window into your bloodstream, revealing vital information that’s invisible to the naked eye.

Spot The Signs of Measles

That rash you’re seeing might not be what you think it is. Before those telltale spots appear, measles starts with symptoms that look exactly like a common cold. We’re talking high fever, often reaching 104 degrees Fahrenheit, accompanied by a persistent cough that just won’t quit. Your eyes become red and watery, sensitive to light in a way that makes you want to hide in a dark room.

Here’s what many people don’t know: tiny white spots called Koplik spots show up inside your mouth, on the inner cheeks, about two to three days before the rash emerges. These are actually a key diagnostic sign doctors look for.

Then comes the distinctive rash, starting at the hairline and face before spreading downward across your entire body over three days. The spots are flat red areas with small raised bumps that sometimes merge together. The fever spikes even higher when the rash appears, and you’ll feel absolutely exhausted.

What makes measles particularly dangerous is how contagious it is. You can spread it four days before and after the rash appears, and it lingers in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room.

Complications can include pneumonia, brain inflammation, and in severe cases, permanent hearing loss. Vaccination remains the most effective prevention method, providing immunity in about ninety seven percent of cases after two doses.
