This past week, SHPE UW had the opportunity to connect with students across Eastern Washington through hands-on STEM activities! From designing and building to learning about engineering, we loved seeing everyoneโ€™s creativity come to life. A huge thank you to AVELA for making these workshops possible and supporting us throughout our outreach! Weโ€™d also like to thank HCDE, Aero & Astro, Computer Science, NASA Space Grant, and the other UW departments and student organizations that provided materials and resources for the students. Thank you to everyone who welcomed us and joined in on the fun! We had such a great time connecting with students and sharing our love for STEM. Weโ€™re so grateful for our SHPE familia and everyone who helped make this outreach possible! ๐Ÿ’œ

As any good translator or interpreter knows, #translation (i.e. word = word and even sense = sense) is rarely enough. There are so many other, deeply nuanced factors to consider. In the days leading up to my first internship ever, my professor gave me one piece of advice: Meet with three people a week, and learn from every conversation that you have. Initially, I was afraid of โ€œwastingโ€ someoneโ€™s time if I reached out to chat, especially if they were more senior than me. โ€˜Why would they make time for me in their busy day?โ€™ I wondered. But I knew that my professor had given me that advice for a reason, so I followed suit. I crafted an introduction about myself, searched for other writers and storytellers in tech, and asked questions about the steps in their career that led them where they were today. I met with dozens of people, but one conversation early on stood out. At the end of a short meeting with a very senior leader and a page full of notes, the leader said something that surprised me: โ€œI appreciate this conversation, and it gives me insight into what interns and early-in-career folks are thinking.โ€ If youโ€™re questioning if you should reach out to someone, remember this: Mentorship is a two way street, which means that you learn from other people just as much as they learn from you. If you want to take it a step further and show up intentionally to a coffee chat or conversation with someone new, here are some things I recommend! Let me know if thereโ€™s anything youโ€™d add to this list โœจ . . #mentorship #coffeechats #careertips
