Day three of @thegotham project market was wonderful and the most exhausting (ending with a great @sxsw get together). Being in New York was (as always) so vibrant and exciting, and we will be following up on some really great meetings, but you know it’s still the people that make it so special! Meeting some new friends and colleagues and seeing so many old Austin faces again (that really warmed my heart) is what made this a trip to remember. Film is a long road - thanks yall for being in it with me. Next I’ll post about my final morning and mamdani!

Day 2 of @bfsweekend at @sheencenter was built around sessions on producing, directing, acting, cinematography, representation, legal matters, social media content, social impact, mentorship, and navigating festivals and labs. HUGE CONGRATS to our Pitch Contest Finalists. Not only did our winner get a $2,500 cash prize sponsored by @cliveRd and @thegotham, but two of the other finalists were propositioned to continue discussions of producing their work with one of our judges! We program this event with this exact intention--for creatives to experience career-defining opportunities. We also tried some new programming ideas such as: * A panel commemorating legendary filmmaker John Singleton via the author of his biography @golianopoulos and his mentee @sheldoncandis . * A discussion between myself and the other cofounder of Black Film Space, Reggie Williams, about creating our organization and it's relationship to our careers. I also screened the trailer to my short @whiteagbadafilm which was fun! *Two very robust sessions focused on casting, agents and career strategy for actors and multihyphenates moderated by @chichimgr2020 of @chitalentmgmt featuring some of the best in the business. I also want to shout out the team at @tacombi for graciously sponsoring our event by providing their delicious chips. We also ate their yummy tacos for lunch! Thank you to our speakers for their openness and to our attendees for bringing their curiosity into every room. There were so many memorable conversations. We hope you left with useful tools, new relationships, and a little more energy to keep going. Cinema brought us together, but friendship made these TIFF days unforgettable. The best company, the most beautiful souls, and memories made between films, laughter, and late nights. 🎬✨

A little joy feels different when shared with the one and only—someone who is more than a friend, more than a companion, but a beautiful part of your happiness. Thanks @variety and @youtube for the invitation. #tiff

2025 was the year of ARRIVAL. It was kismet for the film to have its world premiere at home in New York City at the @tribeca festival on June 6, 2025 - 10 years to the exact day of Kalief Browder's death. We all were over the moon and overwhelmed with so much emotion. The film started eight years ago with a vision and a calling that filmmaker @sisabueno  had, and Venida and the Browder family trusting her and allowing her in, to whom she is deeply thankful @akeembrowdernyc_ @that_fashion21 @capricorn_est.1992 It culminated in a journey with a talented team and a supportive community all contributing to complete her vision to make this film a reality, including producers @davidfelixsutcliffe @paolagadalamaria and the narration of Venida's poerty by @poetjasminemans  for which she is truly grateful.    FOR VENIDA, FOR KALIEF is a deeply emotional film that follows the legacy of Kalief Browder via the poetry of his mother, Venida. By taking us on a poetic journey between past, present, and future it exposes systemic injustice while centering a mother’s unwavering love, a family’s journey toward healing, and a community determined to see the notorious Rikers Island Jail in New York City close by August 2027. #forvenidaforkalief started its film festival run in Fall 2025, which is still unfolding and will continue in 2026. We are very grateful for every acceptance the film gets. One thing is clear, the film is resonating for audiences, which is super gratifying.  Please stay in touch and follow us on IG.
