MIGRAINE: what I wish I knew in the beginning. #migraine is a chronic, life-long condition and can be a disability.

There are many types & subtypes of migraine, and that can change throughout your life. Migraine does NOT need to be super duper painful. As a primary headache disorder, a migraine attack’s cause is migraine disease — meaning that migraine disease makes one sensitive to stimuli & factors called triggers, and those triggers may pile up to provoke an attack. Stress is the biggest trigger of all, and most triggers can’t be avoided, so disease management is critical.

You can’t get rid of migraine, it’s a lifelong disease… but remission is possible with appropriate treatment and management. While quick fixes seem amazing, they often don’t target what’s driving migraine, which may lead to disease progression.

The best way to PREVENT migraine is to work with a neurologist or headache specialist and develop an individualized preventive & acute plan for YOU. Because different migraine types & severities (& comorbidities) have different contributing mechanisms that make your migraine disease unique to you.

Headache specialists will share the most accurate, evidence-based information — because they have additional training in 200+ headache disorders, including migraine. Other neurologists & pain management specialists will have a working knowledge of the disease but it won’t be as current/up to date. They won’t know the nuance and the distinctions that can make the difference between transitioning from high-frequency episodic migraine to episodic migraine (instead of to chronic migraine). The migraine world is changing fast, so let’s support the experts and share their posts when they publish.
