Today we're recommending The Way of the Samurai Women by @rimi_monster. Who were the samurai women, and what might samurai spirit look like today?

In recent times, samurai have been made famous by movies, manga, video games, even fashion. They have somewhat become macho icons but that's only part of the story. Some samurai, particularly those who remained steadfast in the clan household, were women. Some were even warriors. In this book, Rimika explores how we, today, can reclaim their ancient wisdom - much of it held in the philosophical tradition of Zen Buddhism - for our times and in a more inclusive and holistic way.

Readers will discover the inspirational example of historical samurai women, alongside contemporary Japanese women who possess the samurai spirit. The book delves into concepts which allowed the samurai to survive and thrive: nature worship, mindful movement and performing the ideal self. Along the way, it offers prompts and exercises to help the reader channel the wisdom of legendary samurai women.

What happened was, when I was walking into independent bookshops and asking booksellers to stock my book ‘The Way of the Samurai Women’, it only seemed right to buy a book too. These books got added to my pile of other books that I was yet to read, thus creating a tsundoku (積ん読) this now trendy concept of a pile of books 📚 . You’ll see some killer titles in there, all reflecting my taste and personal preference 👅 If any of you have read a title, do start a convo with me. I’m also gonna try and leave snippets of thoughts about the books I manage to read. Wonder how many I’ll get through before the year close? 🔥 🐎 🔜 🐏

A very special & geeky fun evening with @tinnedfishwithtyler from Washington State before he embarks on his UK tinned fish tour. Of course, we did an anchovy tasting with @conservasortiz @brindisaspanishfoods @conservas_pujado_solano @mevalco_ @anchoashazas & the very special & ultra rare @slowfood_international ‘Presidia’ Masculina de Magghia anchovies from Ognina, Sicily I brought back from Turin’s @slow_food_events. Dinner was my Roman slow-braised lamb cacciatore with anchovies & vinegar from my book ‘Consider the Anchovy: a journey in pursuit of the little fish with the big flavour’ published @headlinehome plus yummy Janssen’s Temptation. In recent times, samurai have been made famous by movies, manga, video games, even fashion. They've become macho icons, but that's only part of the story. Some samurai, particularly those who remained steadfast in the clan household, were women. Some were even warriors.

Join me on my journey as I explore samurai practices, culture and myth, delving into a world full of nature worship, Zen Buddhism, Shinto, martial arts, meditation, poetry and pilgrimage.

All the while, I discover more about my own Japanese and samurai heritage, which my late mother, Akemi, had been so proud of. I also share stories of contemporary samurai-spirited women who have fought, survived and thrived against the odds.

It’s a rare thing when every dish on the menu is as ravishingly appealing as @cafeclementlondon at @st.clementlondon where the influence of 20 or so years @therivercafelondon on @dannybohan @therivercafelondon is splendidly apparent. It was lovely to reminisce about Rose Gray whom would surely love this ‘Café’ as much as I do and Danny touchingly said how he wished she was there to offer advice. I had to indulge in the supreme decadence of the cheese soufflé, a cheeky ultra rich comté & Gruyère unashamed homage to @le_gavroche_restaurant @michel_roux_jr @stephen_cottage French spatchcock chicken had the intense savouriness I crave and he ordered the crinkles, the most divine triple cooked fluffy chips with plenty of crunchy bits. My turbot was beautiful though Danny & I agreed the anchovy hollandaise needed a little more anchovies for the requisite oomph. Happy to discover he is a fellow anchovy obsessive & give him a copy of ‘Consider the Anchovy; a journey in pursuit of the little fish with the big flavour’ published by near neighbour @headlinehome Finish with a seasonal tart: we had plum & brown butter & a majestic poached pear with chantilly cream in an iced silver coupe. It’s the kind of attention to detail I love as ‘The Mature Foodie’ as well as the flattering light, the well spaced tables with proper linen, the lovely, kindly front of house staff, just chatty enough & very much themselves rather than over drilled & the soft jazz that reflects the low key art deco glamour of the room. It’s a gem, I’ll certainly be returning to & look out for my review in the winter issue of @brummellmag alongside my choices of the other new restaurants you really need to visit. #Review of The Dark Wine Sea by Victoria Hislop

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Victoria Hislop is an excellent storyteller of historic events and finding hidden or forgotten areas or those not perhaps at the forefront of people's minds. She fills in those gaps with the meticulous research she does and then compels you to read it by mixing in fictional writing that's intriguing, relatable and transporting in the places she travels to and the characters you meet. If you enjoyed The Island and The Figurine, this is one I recommend to put on your, possibly already burgeoning to-be-read piles.

The year is 1946 and there's a power vacuum between the right and the left factions. You feel the tension in this period directly after the second world war. The world war may have finished, but it is shown that Greece is still at unrest with fighting. What's painted is a frightful picture of life, not as we know it nor imagine it to be, shown through Fotina, who has had her second child. She later lands in prison, meanwhile the fate of children is not as you would think when the government's soldiers arrive and families are separated.

It's an all encompassing, absorbing book that makes you truly feel what's happening, emotionally as well as sensory. The characters are the type you can invest in and you want Markella and Fontina to find their children safe and well. What comes next is a need to read more about what happens to the characters and travel further into this period of history. It ensures its place as an intriguing page-turner.

I had my book launch for The Way of the Samurai Women last week at @stanfordstravel bookshop. It was a blast 💥 My friends, family & guests all came out in force to show love and support. I am eternally grateful.

My intro. talk was guided by my friend Eloise Stevens, who made the BBC radio documentary about me writing the book called ‘Searching for my Samurai Mother’ (still available on BBC Sounds). It was the perfect way for people to learn about my book. My process of research: going to meet women masters of martial arts and ancient practices, which the samurai would have done. How I re-connected with my own Japanese & samurai heritage through exploring these disciplines, and came to comprehend more about my late mother, Akemi, who was a teacher of Japanese language & culture. It’s been a journey. Ongoing, still.

Now that the book is out there 🌏 If any of you read it, then please review it on any of these sites, as it helps me rise up in rankings: Amazon, Goodreads, Waterstones. I won’t read the reviews, so you can be as honest as you like. Probs better for my mental health anyway. Thank you again for all the support.
