Before Kew Gardens was a city park, it was a private resort. This stone house was built by the owner’s son for his bride.

Joseph Williams, a Londoner and former army sergeant, named his land in the Beach after Kew Gardens back home and opened the Canadian Kew Gardens as a lakeside resort in 1879. In 1902 his son Kew married Bertha Curran, and Kew and his brothers built this Queen Anne Revival house on the resort grounds, using limestone and shale from Lake Ontario hauled by the brothers’ stonehookers.

After Joseph sold Kew Gardens to the City for a public park in 1907, the other buildings on the grounds were moved or torn down. This one stayed and became home to the park caretaker. Kew moved his family to Lake Front near the Balmy Beach Club, a house that was later expropriated and demolished for Eastern Beaches Park, which opened in 1932. The house he built for Bertha is still standing on Lee Avenue.
