i often don’t know my couples before they get engaged. i didn’t know them when they went through hard things or when they celebrated their biggest wins. i come in at the part of the story where those moments shaped them into the people that decided to get married. and those people then show up in front of me and a small group of people they love and for a few hours, everything is crystal clear.

i see little clues throughout this process. parts of their stories are told to me, rehearsed lines, the short version they tell everyone. then throughout the weekend, piece by piece, the more interesting chapters get revealed. in small gestures, in moments of unexpected emotion, in vows and in speeches. i get to learn what really makes them who they are and why we’re all gathered here today. it’s this slow and intimate dance. it’s real life.

a single ray of light stayed on davita and brady throughout the entire round of toasts. words came easily to their family and friends as one after another, with the sun setting in the carmel hills, they listed the endless ways in which they loved and admired these two. i found my own eyes filling with tears as i framed how brady watched davita, glowing in the light that every person in that garden was reflecting back to them. later, illuminated by a crackling fire, davita looked around at her people: “this is exactly what i pictured”. on this night, everything that had ever happened had led to this moment of bliss. everything made sense.
