Her saying “You the preacher go to heaven then” sent me lol but my mother reflects on what song from Fela makes her think of the world today.

6 years later and I don’t forget what happened in Nigeria this day. I don’t forget the few of us went and protested in front of Nigerian embassy. Our condition in humanity must always be at the forefront of our priority. Water for all over champagne for a few. #endsars

Kicking off the week with our Mental Wealth Monday Vibe Series! 🧠💎 We took a moment to slow down with good company at our @gentlementalvibes Exchange and talk “JOY” with a few good men!!⁣

@thecrownreturns did an excellent job asking the men in the house a few questions throughout the event but this one was specifically centered around finding joy. Remember, your joy matters just as much as your responsibilities. 🖤
⁣
Mental health isn’t always just about navigating the heavy stuff…it’s also about making space for what lights you up💡💪🏾

What’s ONE thing bringing you joy right now? Let us know in the comments! 👇⁣

✨ CULTURE. COMMERCE. COMMUNITY. ✨

Last week’s Refill brought fashion, entrepreneurship, and cultural identity into focus as part of our Africa on Stage celebration at Newark Symphony Hall!

We welcomed Shells Naija of Biageli for an intimate showcase of her collection, followed by a candid fireside conversation with Thando Kafele, the King of Loc.

Together, they explored a question facing so many cultural entrepreneurs: How do we honor our authenticity while building businesses that can thrive beyond our own communities?

From practical advice for emerging entrepreneurs to the delicate balance between cultural preservation and commercial success, the conversation challenged us to consider what it means to grow our businesses without compromising the stories, traditions, and values that make our work distinctive.

A special thank you to the talented vendors who brought their creativity, products, and entrepreneurial spirit to our marketplace. Your presence made the evening an even richer celebration of culture, commerce, and community. Supporting businesses like yours is an essential part of the ecosystem we're building at the Hall.

Thank you to Shelly, Kafele, DJ MPURE, our vendors, and everyone who joined us for an evening of style, substance, and meaningful exchange.

At Newark Symphony Hall, ART IS IMPACT. The Refill is where we make room for the conversations that move our culture and our community forward.

🥂 Until the next Refill!

We assume sometimes that Fela’s activist spirit was self conjured but when you know his mother you know that his fighting spirit was passed on. Fela’s mother Funmilayo Kuti laid the groundwork for what Fela would become. My mom shares the impact of Funnmulayo on her life.

Today we celebrate Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s 88th birthday. So to people unfamiliar to his legend my mom and I had a discussion recollecting what it was like during Nigeria in the 70’s. Don’t forget to check out Fela! The Concert presented by @newarksymphonyhall October 22nd

This particular story I always taught me the importance of Accountability to society. The death of Fela’s mother has always been a powerful story to me. As I sit with my own mothers i can even begin to imagine losing my mother over the fight for the people. To now march your mother’s coffin to the state building, his story is an example of sacrifice and I always feel like keeping his fighting spirit in our current struggles is a must.
