THE MEMORY TREE — Heather Davey

There is something particularly unsettling about a place that remembers what its inhabitants would rather forget. The Memory Tree takes that idea and weaves it into a haunting tale of grief, guilt, and the enduring power of the past.

When Kate Greenwood moves to the rural village of Hope-under-Barrow with her husband and young son, she hopes for a fresh start. Instead, she finds herself troubled by strange visions, unfamiliar memories, and the ancient yew tree standing in the neighbouring churchyard.

Told across two timelines, Davey's novel gradually reveals the secrets connecting past and present. I particularly enjoyed the use of folklore and the significance of the yew tree, which becomes much more than an eerie backdrop. Its association with death, remembrance, and the passage of time makes it a fitting centrepiece for the story.

The atmosphere is one of the novel's greatest strengths. There is a persistent sense of unease surrounding the village, its peculiar traditions, and the things its inhabitants refuse to discuss. Beneath the supernatural mystery lies a thoughtful exploration of grief, inherited guilt, and the consequences of keeping painful truths buried.

This is a slow-burning Gothic folk horror that favours atmosphere and creeping dread over outright terror. A haunting reminder that the past has a way of taking root, no matter how deeply we try to bury it.

I picked up 'The Memory Tree' by @heather_author the other day when I was in ASDA and left unattended in the book aisle. I haven't read anything remotely horror related since my teens but the cover caught my eye and I loved the sound of the storyline.

🪦✨️🪦🖤🪦✨️🪦🖤🪦✨️🪦🖤🪦✨️🪦

If you don't hear from me for a while its because I'm hiding behind the sofa being a scardy cat and the books in the freezer

Recommend me a book with a tree on the cover 🪾

Thank you to @titanbooks for a copy of The Memory Tree by @heather_author 🥰
Ad - PR Product

This story is perfect for readers who enjoy a gothic atmosphere and chilling folklore rather than more gruesome and extreme horror. It's a story of grief and loss, of friendship, secrets and forgotten memories. There were times I was creeped out but also many emotional moments.
Read the synopsis below 👇🏻

🪾 When her husband, Ben, takes on his first parish in the rural community of Hope-Upon-Barrow, Kate Greenway feels like it could be a fresh start for the family. But from the moment they arrive, something just feels… off. It could be the locals, with their strange rituals and rites. Or it could be the yew tree which stands in a graveyard bordering their garden, whose presence brings headaches, visions and disturbing, unfamiliar memories that do not belong to Kate.

As she investigates the strange things happening to her, Kate begins to delve into the history and memories of Hope-upon-Barrow, and the more she uncovers, the more she risks losing herself to something deadly and ancient. 🪾
