Our “private” pools and cabana atop the hotel is outrageous- a perfect way to close our quick little getaway.
This time of year is off season / cold for the Colombians 👀 (it’s 90 with 95% humidity). So- the Getsamani has been “quiet”- which we love. I wouldn’t want to be here during season (their summer / our winter)- muy muy muy caliente y mas mas mas mas gente (people).

Since our trip was about restoration and relaxation- we wanted our home away from home to be perfect.
And it was.

The Getsamani is a glorious section of Cartagena comprised of a tiny labyrinth of streets lined with stucco structures and giant wooden doorways (in the Spanish Colonial Style) with indoor / outdoor tropical garden living beyond the giant walls.

Our hotel is an incredible example of indoor / outdoor tropical life in Cartagena. I could live here for the rest of my life.

Getsemaní is one of Cartagena’s oldest neighborhoods, originally settled by artisans, merchants, and working-class families who helped shape the city’s culture and independence. Its architecture reflects a blend of Spanish colonial design and Caribbean influence, with colorful facades, wrought-iron balconies, and giant wooden doors that conceal intimate courtyards beyond- designed to close off the bustle of the busy streets- immersing you in stunning tropical gardens.

When we first arrived in Cartagena, I thought- “o boy- we’re definitely in for an adventure”.

After about 10 minutes or so- our cab turned a corner and we began to see old forts and Spanish colonial architecture. Moments later- we turned another corner into the “Getsamani”- once a place you wouldn’t dare go- but now- authentically fabulous beyond words.

Gentrified- but still authentic; not fully commercialized (like Manhattan and Williamsburg which have lost ALL character and authenticity). That being said- Ritz Carlton, Starbucks and 4 Seasons have all staked their claim here- but we’re not here for that bullshit.

We arrived at Casa Lola- our home for the week. We stepped into the lobby and it felt like home. As a young architecture student- my thesis was a building and its relationship to landscape / nature. You enter this hotel- like many structures in the Getsamani- through giant wooden walled doors- only to reveal a tropical courtyard which everything stems from. In the center of the courtyard is a fountain/ rain collector that gathers water then distributes runs through the small boutique hotel.

Truly a magical experience- and this was just our first hour in Cartagena. I knew we would be in for an EXCEPTIONAL experience.

The Saloon? No- Cartagena!

So Heath asked me what I wanted to do for our 3 year anniversary dinner? In typical autopilot mode- I said “Meh- I dunno- Saloon? (Our favorite Philly haunt (and first date).

A week later he said- pack your bags- we’re off to Cartagena.
