On this Easter Day, my thoughts extend to all who celebrate. In the serene backdrop of Monterey, we gathered in a small circle, raising our voices for a ceasefire and lending support to the voiceless in Palestine.

Amidst the chants, my heart ached for my dear sister-in-law, Shireen, and her twin children, residing in a modest, makeshift tent in Dair Al Balah. The mere thought of their anxious night fills me with profound sorrow. Though outwardly composed, inwardly, my soul seethes with indignation, unable to bear witness to their plight.

If you were nearby, my family would extend a warm invitation to join them and partake in their Iftar meal. Today, amidst the solemnity of Ramadan and after 10 days of fasting, my family in Gaza assembled to prepare and indulge in a culinary masterpiece: ورق عنب (grape leaves filled with rice, delicately wrapped, and adorned with fresh onion, tomato, and potato, then gently cooked over an open wood fire near their humble plastic tent). This heartfelt creation was meticulously crafted by the skilled hands of my sister-in-law Amal and my niece Amna, marking it as the most treasured meal since the commencement of the war.

Seated around the Iftar table, my family radiated warmth and generosity as they graciously shared this sublime dish with their displaced neighbors. Despite the adversities they face, each guest had the privilege of savoring four of these exquisitely prepared grape leaves. Amidst the turmoil, my family chose to foster joy and unity.

This noble gesture encapsulates the unwavering Palestinian spirit of compassion and solidarity. Even in times of scarcity, my family in Gaza remains steadfast in their commitment to caring for their neighbors and honoring the sanctity of food.

To my dear friends and followers, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your unwavering love and support. I implore you to continue amplifying and sharing our story before it’s too late. The burden of fear weighs heavily on me as I worry for the safety and well-being of my family, especially my beloved nieces and nephews: Alma, Ola, Haya, Maye, Rama, Noor, Amna, Narmeeb, Salem, and Yamen. They are filled with potential and dreams yet to be realized. Please share our message far and wide, extend a helping hand if you can, and remember, even the smallest contributions can make a significant impact. Thank you.

I am delighted to share with you a photo of the lentil soup that my family in Rafah concentration camp prepared for dinner over the past two days, meticulously cooked over an open fire. Alongside, I’ve included a video capturing yesterday’s cold, rainy day here in Monterey, California, where I took the time to prepare a hearty lentil soup to warm the hearts of our supporters.

In these trying times, food becomes more than sustenance; it becomes a channel of connection with my people who are enduring unimaginable hardships in Gaza during this ongoing genocide. For Palestinians, particularly those in Gaza, a simple lenten soup is a luxury amidst the cold and scarcity of nourishment. It pains me deeply to witness their struggles, yet it motivates me to share our solidarity and support in any way possible.

Lentil soup holds a special significance for us, symbolizing not just a meal but also the resilience and unity of the Palestinian people. Its simplicity belies its nutritional richness, providing comfort and sustenance during challenging times. I have also chronicled this tradition in my recently published book, where I delve into the significance of food as a source of strength and solidarity in the face of adversity.photo credit @salem._.mdhat @amna_alaydi
