I’m sitting here in Shelby waiting on a the Empire Builder and reminiscing about my time in Helena and Missoula Montana with friends.

I love being surrounded by potters💓 they create magical welcoming places like @archie_bray - where our friend Robin @hebron.clay took classes in the 70s. It’s truly an inspiring place to be & I know I’ll be thinking about it for a long time.🪄

What do dinosaur bones, deep love of land and family, and remembrance of people and animals that have passed have in common? The last 3 North Dakota tile workshops in Bowman, Hettinger and Dickinson. I was so fortunate to make tiles with the @sternbergcamps kids at the @pioneertrailsmuseum as well as with artists @big_oakpress @caeciedeblaere @painternicole @tobiaszikmund @andreafagerstrom and Myra Klein. Thank you to all the North Dakotans who participated in these workshops. I can’t wait to incorporate your tiles into ”Hoodoo Herd,” the public art sculpture @sunmccolgin and I are making outside Medora next spring. I had a blast making tiles and collecting stories for Sun’s and my upcoming Public Art sculpture, “Hoodoo Herd” with NDSU students and teachers last week. A very special thanks to David Swenson, head of NDSU ceramics, for mixing me the Hebron clay. And also thanks to Robin Reynolds for the schoolhouse red slip! It is lovely to be making these tiles out of North Dakota Clay for that extra special connection to the land. If you would like to hear people talking about their tiles, see the YouTube link in my bio. #ryahchristensenart #sunmccolginart #hoodooherd

🧨Since it’s the 4th of July we felt it only appropriate to share the process of using firecrackers to shape pottery!

🪨 Compacting the clay via slamming it on a hard surface is all part of the process! A little bts from last week’s pottery workshop with @hebron.clay.

Meet Robin Reynolds, Artist and owner of Dacotah Clayworks! GRAC is thrilled to have her host a workshop in Lemmon on June 25th. Learn more about it by checking out the FB Event- https://www.facebook.com/share/cPCXjAwpyBAR4dcB/

About the Artist-
Studio potter, Robin Reynolds, harvests wild clay in western North Dakota to make clay bodies and slip glazes from indigenous clay she finds at abandoned brickyards, along roadside cut-banks, and around badland buttes. With a love of North Dakota’s open country landscapes and her affection for folk pottery, Reynolds is inspired to create her practical and deceptively simple wares she calls “dirt pots” in the bucolic style of Colonial American pottery. Robin’s travel in Europe, Scandinavia, Greece, Thailand, and Iceland enhanced her world view about the cross pollination of cultures and timelessness of clay vessels.

In the mid-70’s Reynolds moved to Bellingham, WA, where she apprenticed and later owned and operated Good Earth Pottery in the historic Fairhaven District. Returning to her home state in 1996, Robin settled in Hebron, ND, in proximity to the town’s brickyard and to operate Dacotah Clayworks, her rural pottery business in a vintage Texaco station. Reynolds is a retired adjunct Ceramics Instructor, Dickinson State University, Dickinson, ND, and Roster Artist with ND Council on the Arts. In 2023 Reynolds and her cat, Tripod, moved to Bowman, ND where she is a semi-retired potter and arts advocate. Dacotah Clayworks is open by appointment and offers pop-up clay classes.
