During one of our recent historic home rehabilitation projects, we had to dig out the original dirt floor in the basement to pour a concrete moisture barrier. With the new expansive floor and newfound space, we saw an opportunity to feature the original stone foundation walls as a rustic backdrop for a serene spa retreat. An area by the windows provided ample daylight and a center stage for a Japanese soaking tub and an adjacent shower, accessed through a changing room appointed with plush robes and slippers. The experience is accessed by way of the basement stairwell, which is illuminated by a stained glass pantry door opposite its entrance and with vintage @maison.jansen wall sconces that seem to beckon you down the secret passageway to this secret grotto. @hudsonhottubs @greenfield.hill.build

We are beyond thrilled to share that we will be publishing our second book Distinctly American with Rizzoli on September 9, 2025. Distinctly American explores ten of our projects, each uniquely rooted in tradition, truth and an inherent connection to history and place. We do a deep dive into the conception, design and legacy of these properties across Litchfield County, the Hudson Valley, Manhattan and Brooklyn. An enormous thank you to our collaborative team behind this monumental feat! @cbrady @rizzolibooks @chrismottalini @jeffholt @amandakirkpatrickphoto @stephenkentjohnson @johnrgruen @jamesblackagency To pre-order, please click the link in our bio. #interiordesign #architecture #historichomes

I took some inspiration from Heide Hendricks' "Our Way Home" and did a moody blue/green/grey half-wall in our stairwell. I love how it looks with the changing leaves. #swcolorlove #sw9644Portsmouth

Two decades ago, @heidehendricks traded her Brooklyn home for a sprawling 1800s Connecticut farmhouse called Ellsworth. The interior designer took ownership of the historic property in Sharon alongside her husband, Rafe Churchill—the other half of the eponymous architecture and design firm @hendrickschurchill. Naturally, the two make frequent pilgrimages to nearby Greenwich when in need of a dose of cozy, creative inspiration. “I like to drive around Greenwich marveling at some of the historic properties, drawing on these magnificent homes for inspiration for my own designs,” Hendricks tells CULTURED. The Connecticut town was settled in 1640 and is about the size of a pin-prick in comparison to Hendricks’s hometown of New York, but boasts its own film festival, symphony orchestra, and art museum, making it a destination for creatives across the region. It’s also the final stop on @jcrew’s Local Time Tour, a brand the interior designer turns to for clothes that will travel with her on her frequent drives across the rolling state. Today, J.Crew’s Greenwich store will play host to a suite of pop-up activities—from custom chain stitching to live illustration.  To mark the occasion, Hendricks shares her ultimate guide to Greenwich—from a delicious midday lunch stop to an antiquing itinerary that will keep you coming back.
