Le Chic Chat Soiree, the fancy feline fete and fundraiser hosted by Helen Sanders Cat Protection and Welfare Society (CatPAWS), rivals the Jellicle Ball in festivity, frippery and fun — maybe not fur but definitely in glitter and generosity. F-f-fft!

Scratch This! planned to include the Soiree in this column’s Tail-waggin’ and nose boopin’ but, alas, they’re sold out. However, there are two prime tickets left for one of our readers to win, thanks to the Long Beach Watchdog (full disclosure: I’m a member of the CatPAWS board of directors). Here’s how you do it, along with some background.

CatPAWS established a mobile spay/neuter clinic in 2023 and then opened a brick-and-mortar facility a couple of years later in Huntington Beach. Both clinics serve trapped stray cats, ones lucky enough to sleep on someone’s clean laundry, and some from Long Beach Animal Care Services. The clinics started out by providing spay/neuter procedures for cats that TNVR volunteers trapped once a week, often at no cost, and then added another weekday to offer low-cost procedures for cats who live with humans.

As of Oct. 16, the combined clinics have spayed and neutered 4,981 cats and kittens since summer 2023. This includes 2,111 turned-off faucets since Jan. 1 of this year. The clinics average about 25 cats, but last week, they managed about 45!

Today, Gatos Callejeros United had its first clinic day @helensanderscatpaws! In collaboration with @fixnation and @lisapiersondvm, we brought in 10 community cats from the Wilmington area for TNR services! Each cat received spay/neuter surgery, FVRCP and rabies vaccines, flea treatment, and their beautiful ear tips! Thank you to Fixnation and Dr Lisa Pierson for sponsoring their full services, allowing us to continue our free TNR program in our neighborhood.

🐾 The TNR work never stops! ❤️

We may not post about our TNR efforts every week, but we’re out trapping weekly to reduce suffering and stabilize community cat populations in Long Beach and surrounding LA areas!

Today was a double clinic day, with 11 cats receiving TNVR thanks to Helen Sanders CatPAWS! 🎉

Without amazing partners and high-volume clinics like Helen Sanders CatPAWS and The Little Lion Foundation, we couldn’t make nearly the impact we do.

🐈 So far in 2026, I’ve personally TNVRed 245 Long Beach cats! And that’s not counting Amanda’s incredible efforts in LA!

We’re proud to be part of the solution! 💕

Five years of love and chaos. Happy gotcha day, @bastandisis !

It's Mama's day off so we spent most of today napping. First, Isis wouldn't let me leave the bed this morning. Then Bast wouldn't let me leave the couch. They know what's best for me, I guess. 🥰

Most days we look at you guys and think how lucky we are that you chose us! Well, Bast chose @jokerlorian first actually. Isis just came along as a package deal. 🤗

Now Isis is daddy's awkward child and Bast is Mama's nap buddy. We cannot express how much joy you brought into our lives.

Thanks @helensanderscatpaws for matching us. Their foster did a great job preparing them for adoption and your volunteers continue to help when we have questions. We are grateful to have found you guys!

CAT PAWS Board Member and volunteer Deborah Felin Magaldi has a B.S. in Psychology, as well as an MBA. In her current capacity as CFO and founder of Transit Marketing Group Inc., she brings her many talents to the table.

Deborah’s experience in business goes back decades. Her industry experience includes public relations, marketing and organizational management. She oversees the company’s financial planning, sets pricing for the company’s major product line, handles direct account orders and is the adviser to the sales and marketing team.

Her animal rescue and care experience began in 2004, as a foster for a southern California shelter. She has since fostered for several shelters and private rescue organizations, prior to co-founding Helen Sanders CatPAWS in early 2010.

Her responsibilities at CatPAWS include working directly with shelters and developing programs to reduce euthanasia, community outreach, administering the spay/neuter program, fundraising, donor relations and special projects.
