POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Bullmastiffs were known as "The Gamekeeper's Night Dog." Bred in 1800s England, they silently tracked poachers across estates, then pinned them down without a bite until help arrived.

Meanwhile, your entire home security plan is remembering to lock the front door.

Private lessons should leave you feeling like you can actually handle your dog without the trainer standing next to you.

That means you’re not just watching someone work your dog for an hour. You’re learning what to do, why you’re doing it, and what to change when things don’t go exactly as planned.

Because the real test of a good lesson is what happens when you get home and the trainer isn’t there.

What do you look for when choosing a private trainer?

Impulse control doesn’t seem like a big deal until you’re somewhere like the Rockies and a whole herd of cattle suddenly walks right past you.

That’s when you find out whether your dog actually knows how to think before reacting, or if they’re just good at listening when nothing interesting is happening.

A dog with solid impulse control can see something exciting without immediately chasing it, pulling toward it, or losing their mind over it. That skill matters way beyond training sessions. It’s what gives you more freedom to take your dog places and trust how they’ll handle themselves when something unexpected shows up.

Because eventually, something will show up.

What would your dog do if a herd of cattle walked up while you were camping?

Before and after training: Severe Leash Reactivity

My protocol for private lessons with dogs who have leash reactivity is to focus on 2 commands: Heel and Place.

A lot of the time, reactivity is a symptom of a lack of boundaries and structure in a dog’s daily life. Implementing a strict Heel command along with a Place command can make a huge difference in their overall behavior.

This dog in particular is a bit neurotic, and his owners recently told me that he has become a much calmer dog in his day-to-day life overall and, as you can see, a lot less reactive.

I’ll also add that this dog’s reactivity stems from fear, believe it or not, and a lack of confidence. So while the goal is obviously to address the reactivity, we also have to work on building the dog’s confidence and giving him structure so he knows how to handle situations that previously overwhelmed him.

The difference speaks for itself. #dogtraining #leashtraining

Leash pulling in working dogs usually isn’t about obedience.

It’s about state of mind.

A dog that’s already mentally elevated before the walk even starts will naturally pull, scan, fixate, and rush forward.

Most owners accidentally build this by rewarding anticipation:
- Explosive exits
- Immediate forward movement
- Constant stimulation
- No calm before action

The dog stays in a constant state of pressure.

Structure before movement changes everything.

Teach neutrality before the reward.
Teach patience before access.
Teach calm before intensity.

That’s how control becomes reliable even in high-drive dogs.

One of the biggest mistakes owners make with working dogs is assuming more drive automatically fixes the problem.

Increasing intensity through additional bite work, constant stimulation, and more pressure is not always the solution.

But without control, structure, and emotional regulation, drive can easily turn into chaos.

That’s when you start seeing:
- Explosive reactivity
- Obsession without clarity
- Constant overstimulation
- Dogs that can’t switch off

A powerful dog without stability becomes difficult to live with.

Working dogs need more than an outlet.
They need leadership, boundaries, and clear expectations both on and off the field.

Drive should be controlled not constantly amplified.

If your dog struggles with reactivity, overstimulation, or control issues, DM us for a behavior assessment 🔥

I haven’t been super active on here lately but I had to come on to post this pretty girl. This is Amelia and she is on her 4th week of our unique board and train program where she gets to go home on the weekends! Amelia is working on overall obedience and confidence building. She’s a super sweet girl but is very unsure of herself in new environments and around new people/dogs. She’s already come a long way but her owner will have to keep up the work with the foundation I have set for Amelia to have the most success! #dogtraining

Cane Corsos are known for their territorial awareness and ability to stay alert to everything happening around them.

Meanwhile, you walked into another room and forgot your entire mission immediately.

Be honest - how many times a day does that happen to you? 👇
