Happy Gothic Day of Visibility for those that celebrate. I wanted to do something special so I rolled back prices on all the goth rock, post-punk, deathrock, darkwave, industrial releases I’ve done. You can find all these tapes and cds for $6.66 and the record for 13. I’m gonna let this run for 24 hours so take advantage while you can. Even if you don’t pick anything up, you can listen to all of them for free. Presenting: Killer Couture, In Retrograde, The Gallery, Mystic Priestess, Deep Cavity, Sectarian Bloom, 55Castles, New Skeletal Faces, False Figure, Nuevo Cuerpo, & Hellish Form!

THE HEAVY METAL SHOP is a legendary institution in Salt Lake City, Utah. Standing the test of time, peddling blasphemous music and warping minds for four decades strong! This shop rules, each place I visited had its own unique individual style, flair and character which is so nice to see in a homogenized society. After shooting the shit for a hot minute I got to learn a bunch about how the madman behind this place cultivated a reputation for being rock solid and an iconic trailblazer. Thru trials and tribulations they’ve kept their nose to the grindstone and continued on and are holding strong in their new location.

Each shop I visited I tried to create a unique curation to contribute to their spaces, for The Heavy Metal Shop we busted out the sleazy Death/Thrash from the Bay Area’s own VORLUST & MOLTEN along with a mini mountain of analog filth on cassette!

If you or anyone you know purchases 2 or more Transylvanian releases from the shop, post a picture of it on here and tag The Heavy Metal Shop and me and I’ll reach out to send you a FREE release for supporting

Of the hundreds of album I was fortunate enough to hear in 2023, it was extremely difficult to whittle the field down to 80–much less 60! As I can’t include all of my favorites in my Top 60, these Honorable Mentions are a convenient place to find stellar releases that I wish I could’ve spent more time with.

Make no mistake: each of these albums possess something unique and more than worthwhile, and many are the more-than-humble beginnings of young artists that will deliver even greater successes in the future!

From dissonant death metal’s mind-bending Anachronism to country music’s 2023 hero, Zach Bryan, these 20 Honorable Mentions are listed in alphabetical order—check them out:

🇨🇭 @anachronismband — Meanders
🇸🇪 @avatarmetal — Dance Devil Dance

One of the strongest genres this year for me was doom metal. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE doom metal, but I was shocked at how much of my year end list was dominated by doom metal records, especially once you got into my top 20. There were SO many great doom metal records this year that it was kinda hard to rank them. My top 10 of the year in backwards order are as follows:

Body Void - Atrocity Machine

Slumbering Sun - The Ever-Living Fire

Ahab - The Coral Tombs

Full of Hell/Primitive Man - Suffocating Hallucination

Hellish Form - Deathless

Oromet - Oromet

Oak - Disintegrate

Bell Witch - Future’s Shadow Part 1: The Clandestine Gate

Clarion Void - Deafening Sounds of Mortality

Witching - Incendium
