THE VOICE AS A TOOL OF FRICTION WITHIN THE SONG Jasmine Dunn’s voice in Pleasure Symbols and Promaja builds its own path, taking distance from any conventional appeal of presenting itself as immediate melodic guidance. It functions, first and foremost, as presence and tension cast over the instrumental. There are echoes of a lineage inaugurated by voices such as Kim Gordon’s (Sonic Youth), especially in the provocative stance. However, Jasmine does not replicate a model; she displaces it. Always operating as an original putting. It is a voice that does not seek to please; it prefers to create friction. In Pleasure Symbols, this approach undergoes a clear transformation. In the initial phase (as a duo), around 2014, the vocal was more introspective and immersed in the mix, with short phrases and greater use of reverb, functioning almost as a diffuse layer within the whole, similar to what we hear in shoegaze bands. However, from 2019 onward (with the main formation as a trio), Jasmine’s voice takes on another role. Verses become longer, the writing expands, and the vocal is brought to the foreground, with fewer effects and greater clarity, assuming a more central function without losing its recited and assertive character. In Promaja (a quartet), this growing tension remains present in each verse, but it begins to coexist with choruses that have a more traditional and striking melodic design. The contrast between the rigidity of the verses and the melodic openness of the choruses does not soften the impact of the vocal. On the contrary, it amplifies its strength and makes the songs’ dynamics more evident. More than a dissonant choice, it is an unique aesthetic position. Jasmine Dunn’s voice asserts itself as a tool of friction within the song. Its originality lies precisely in the way it mixes doses of restraint and provocation, fury and sensuality, across different projects and phases, transforming itself — an active element of tension — into music. #postpunk #darkwave #pleasuresymbols @hellopromaja

This post was a little more delayed than I’d have liked due to waiting for all the funds to land, but I’m finally proud to say that after our final TTL in Naarm we were able to raise another $5400, bringing our total for funds donated to @sisters_inside_inc this year to $14,021. We had packed venues across three states this year, because of artists and punters coming together for something profoundly existential. Thank you to @max_ducker as always with help organising the Melbourne lineup, to @krystal_sooling for putting up with me and helping me with more than I can mention for the Melbourne run. To Nick and crew from @seasonthreespace in Brisbane for their hospitality and love. And to all the bands across all three states that performed and donated their shares so we could get to where we are now. And lastly to @photoyunist for taking on the absurd challenge of photographing 22 acts across an entire day, majority of which featured above. Sadly I’m limited to how many I can post. Until next time <3
