I have always been in pursuit of new sounds since I was a young boy.  My grandmother would take me to Seligman Brothers Records in Toledo, Ohio every Friday after I got home from school to buy one 45 record.  The owner would make recommendations on what to buy, usually novelty records or rock records, and I couldn't wait to get home later that night to play my new found music.

Sometimes, my pursuits of music would be from friends, the radio, and even television.  One Saturday night in January 1980 on television, a program changed my ears (and eyes) forever.  On Saturday Night Live, a strange singer was introduced, by the name of David Bowie.  This singer didn't walk up the the microphone; his backing singers lifted him up and carried him to the mic!  Bowie played three songs on the program, the last being "Boys Keep Swinging", which is the 45 single I purchased because of this performance.  On SNL, David Bowie utilized a green screen effect of his own head tranposed over a puppet's head.  My friend and I who witnessed this bizarre performance were completely mind blown!  I knew I had to get a 45 single of these songs on the next outing to the record store!  The following Friday, my grandmother purchased "Boys Keep Swinging"; I don't remember how that one was chosen.

"Boys Keep Swinging" released in April 1979 was the lead single off of Lodger, David Bowie's 13th album.  The song is a mix of loud glam rock, funk, and new wave.  Bowie's vocal delivery is in the punk rock realm of shouting and clips during the verses, and more melodic with the backing vocals during the choruses.  The bass is funky, while the drums (played by guitarist Carlos Alomar) are more straightforward sounding.  The guitar solo placed at the end of the song, played by Adrian Belew, was of another world to my young ears: squeals, noises, with the occasional rock riff thrown in.

I still love the pursuit of different music, as well as trying new bourbon whiskeys. Pursuit United (108 proof) has sweet fruit notes of orange and peach, toffee and oak.  The finish has a return of the sweet fruit and oak, with some chocolate; the orange flavor lingers a bit longer.

Today, I am pairing Use Your Illusion I and II by Guns N' Roses with Four Roses Bourbon Small Batch original and select.  This double shot is complex in music and taste.

Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II were released on the same day of September 17, 1991.  Guns N' Roses expanded their sounds on these two discs with the use of synthesizers, coral sitar, and a sweeping use of piano on many songs.  Having two discs, Guns shined on epic songs that exceeded the typical single length of three and a half minutes.  My favorite song, "Civil War" is pushing towards eight minutes long and features delicate acoustic guitars before unleashing into a crashing full out rock song with layered electric guitars.  Other standouts are the epic tracks of "November Rain" and "Coma"; both tracks showcasing Guns N' Roses' complexity of holding the listener's attention across the ten minute mark of massive amounts of moods.

Four Roses Bourbon expressions always have a great tastes.  Here we Small Batch (original) at 90 proof with tastes of oak, mixed fruits, cherries, caramel and rye; all of these tastes come back nice and strong on the finish.  Small Batch Select has a stronger proof of 104 with tastes of oak, fruit, black pepper and vanilla; the finish is bold and long of sweet vanilla, oak and leather.
