October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. As future nurses, we learn that violence doesn’t always leave visible marks—it affects physical health, emotional well-being, and academic success.

According to the CDC, about 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men in the United States experience sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime.

Balancing classes, clinicals, work, and family is already demanding. If you are navigating a relationship that feels unsafe, overwhelming, or controlling, please know you do not have to carry it alone. Our campus community and confidential resources are here for you.

💜 Resources & Support:

Campus Support: Visit the Counseling & Student Support Center supportservices@abtech.edu

National Domestic Violence Hotline: Free, confidential, 24/7 support. Call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or text "START" to 88788.

In an immediate emergency, call 911 or Campus Police at (828) 398-7125

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and in honor of this cause we are collaborating with our Community Partner, Helpmate, to release a special beer. 💜🍺 This month, for every pint sold of Brewing Hope, a session IPA, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Helpmate. We’re honored to partner with them in their mission to bring awareness to domestic violence, support and protect survivors, and prevent future harm. For more information on their cause, visit their page and website @helpmatebuncombecounty or stop by their table at Highland on October 9 between 4-7pm.

Every quarter, East Fork partners with an organization doing good work in our Asheville home community. This quarter, we’ve partnered with @helpmatebuncombecounty, an organization that supports victims and survivors of intimate partner violence.

We share Helpmate’s belief that in order to challenge our society, we must reflect the violence-free world in which we want to live. 1% of all East Fork purchases go directly to Helpmate, now through the end of September.

Tiny Movements the North Carolina Extravaganza was magical in the blue mountains! Grateful to Trillium Arts Founders Heather Hartley and Phil Reynolds for collaborating on us to produce these incredible experiences! Day 1 a sold out screening at the inspired gallery Mars Landing with our gracious host Miryam Rojas. What a gift to have Leah Song offer some beautiful music to open the evening! Then day 2 at Little Animals gallery in Asheville with wonderful host Jeff Kinzel! Special thanks to our ace moderator Hella Rader, host of the Stories that Sparkle podcast. She kept everything engaged, on point and kept the conversation moving forward. And our panel guests who brought so much to the conversation! Todd Willams, Buncombe County District Attorney, Crystal Webb, My Sister’s Place, Caitrin Doyle, Helpmate.
Day 3 took everything to the next level, when Jenn and I joined Christina Soriano, Professor at Wake Forest University in the Red Barn Studio at Odonata Farms for a movement and self-creating tiny kitchen dance and cinema workshop. The participants were so creative, brave and joyful. It was a wonderful experience. I’m humbled by the life force of this project and how it keeps growing and shining. And biggest shout out thanks to Jenn, the Thelma to my Louise for being the greatest partner and a true friend. Ah disco ball humans let’s keep taking the light and diffusing it in all directions!

While our teams are always caring for our patients, this fall they have also been very busy caring for our community in a different way. 🍂🧡

We are sending a huge THANK YOU to our amazing Mission Health family for their dedication and to our community partner organizations for their generosity. As the season of giving officially kicked off, our colleagues volunteered their time across WNC, participating in fundraising walks and supporting local events with education tables, expert speakers and rolling up their sleeves to help those in need.

Giving back is at the heart of who we are. We are so proud to serve this community, both inside and outside our walls. For more about our role in supporting our neighbors, visit MissionHealth.org/Community.
