Faculty News: Congratulations to Professor Jennifer Nelson for the publication of her article "A Ming Chinese and Spanish Imperial Collaboration in Southeast Asia: The Boxer Codex" in the latest issue of "The Art Bulletin." #uwmadison #uwmadisonarthistory #arthistory #OnWisconsin #theboxercodex #mingchina #spanisharthistory #earlymodernart #artbulletin

You can access Prof. Nelson's article here: https://caa.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00043079.2022.2070395#.Y7RO3uzML0p

Abstract: The Boxer Codex is a ca. 1591 compilation of accounts, written in or translated into Spanish, of the peoples of Southeast Asia alongside illustrations made by a Christian Sangley (Manila Chinese) artist. Scholars should understand this work not as hybrid but as a collaboration between imperial cultures. Evidence of the self-portrait of the artist as a Christianized Sangley and the earliest-known image of a bayoguin, a Tagalog man operating as a female spiritual, medical, and community leader, suggests the rewards of attending to the visual rhetorics of colonization alongside current scholarly emphases on materiality and trade.

Spring 2023 Course Highlight: Professor Jennifer Nelson will be offering AH 500/800: "Why Renaissance? Cult + Art + Colonization" on Tuesdays at 3:00–5:30 PM this spring. L&S Credit and Humanities Breadth. #uwmadison #uwmadisonarthistory #OnWisconsin #renaissanceart #renaissancearthistory #arthistory #colonization

Description: Why should we care about the Renaissance? The Renaissance, when still a useful category, is often characterized by the emergence of mass media (print culture); the use of Christian or “cult” formats as a pretext for an autonomous discourse of art-making and -viewing; and a fantasy that humanist practices established fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Europeans as the direct heirs of the primal greatness of Greco-Roman antiquity. But scholarly discourses about these shifts ignore the simultaneous origins of European colonization as a violent Christianization bolstered by Renaissance developments in literary and artistic cultural production.
In this course, we remember that systemic European colonization began in the Renaissance. To decide what to do about it, we will read classic texts about the Renaissance by Stephen Greenblatt, Hans Belting, Johan Huizinga, and others; classic and new texts about colonization by Frantz Fanon, Sylvia Wynter, Elena Flores Ruiz, Walter Mignolo, and others; and recent scholarship touching on our themes by Elizabeth Bearden, Aaron Hyman, Alessandra Russo, and others. Final seminar papers may apply course discussion to non-Renaissance topics.

Jennifer Nelson reads excerpts from "The Boxer Codex," an ambitious long poem published in the second issue of HERE. It's an honor to give space to this sprawling work negotiating art history and a multidimensional, moving lyricism. Is poetry indeed "the scholar's art?" Jennifer Nelson demonstrates that possibility.
